1257L is your standard tax code and that represents a full tax-free allowance for the year.
If your number has changed or your letter then that means that HMRC are trying to take tax payments using your tax code which then reduces your net pay.
This can happen for multiple reasons, including if you have more than one income source, also if you receive benefits from your job or if you switch jobs during the year you might have a discrepancy of underpaid tax for the year before or finally if you file through self assessment and your taxes are less than £3000 you can elect to have it collected through PAYE instead of a January payment.
