𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐢𝐬 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐨 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐭?

To build a stable and successful business, you need some fundamental pillars in place to turn your dream into a reality.

One of the most important pillars? Financial planning.

There is understandably a lot of uncertainty and concern in the UK right now. For business owners, this makes having a clear financial plan even more important - particularly with the Budget announcement approaching at the end of October.

Here are three key areas every business owner should be thinking about:

𝐁𝐮𝐝𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠

A budget helps you predict, plan and carefully guide your business journey.

As standard, I believe an annual budget is fundamental for any business. Preparing your budget more than six months before the start of your financial year gives you valuable time to plan, prepare and make informed decisions about the year ahead.

𝐂𝐚𝐬𝐡𝐟𝐥𝐨𝐰 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐬

A cashflow forecast goes beyond your budget.

It gives you a clearer picture of when money is coming into your business and when it needs to go out. It can help you identify whether you may need additional funding and understand when customers are likely to pay and when suppliers need to be paid.

Looking ahead over the next 12-24 months can also help you identify potential cashflow pressures before they become problems.

𝐁𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐬

Have you got a great business idea but can't quite get it off the ground?

Perhaps you're unsure about how much you'll need to spend on the goods and services required to get started.

A business plan is an essential tool for any start-up. It encourages you to think through every stage of the process, understand your costs, set clear objectives and create a roadmap for turning your idea into a viable business.

Running a Limited Company? Here are 3 things you really need to get right:

1.Wages & Drawings

If you're paying yourself or other employees, make sure you have a PAYE scheme set up and that wages are processed correctly. Don't forget to consider the tax and National Insurance implications.

If you're taking money out as dividends, make sure they're properly documented and keep your dividend certificates and minutes.

And don't forget to keep clear records of any director's loans — both money taken from the company and money you put into it.

2.Keep the right documentation

Good record keeping is essential. Make sure you're keeping things such as:

• Sales invoices
• Purchase invoices & receipts
• Bank statements
• Payroll records
• Dividend paperwork
• Contracts and agreements
• Director's loan records

It might seem like paperwork, but having the right documents makes preparing your accounts and dealing with HMRC so much easier.

3.Use your company bank account correctly

Keep your personal finances separate from your limited company.

All business income should go into the company bank account — not your personal account.

And remember… the money in the company bank account isn't your personal money.

Don't take money out of the company without a clear reason and the correct documentation/accounting treatment.

Reconcile your bank regularly, stay on top of your incomings and outgoings, and keep a clear record of every transaction.

A limited company is a separate legal entity, so treating the company bank account like your personal bank account can cause unnecessary accounting and tax problems.

Getting these basics right from the start can save you a lot of headaches later. If you want any further advice or have questions about the above, contact us:

My goal is to support my clients throughout their business journey and help them plan confidently for the changes and opportunities ahead. Whether you’re introducing a new product or service, making changes to your brand, or growing your business, careful planning is essential.

When considering any change, it’s important to look beyond the immediate financial impact. Understanding how a decision will affect your finances, operations and future growth can help you make informed decisions and avoid unexpected challenges.

Tax Planning
Consider how the changes you’re making could affect your current tax position. What new taxes might become payable? What are the relevant deadlines, and when will the tax need to be paid? Planning ahead can help you avoid unexpected tax bills and ensure you have sufficient funds available when payments are due.

Budgeting
Understand the impact of change on your cash flow, including new costs and increases to existing costs. Make sure you have a clear understanding of what you’re committing your business to, both now and in the future.

The Right Software
Invest in systems that improve efficiency and can grow alongside your business. The right accountancy software can do more than simply record your finances—it can help you analyse performance, understand your growth and make better-informed decisions.

Onboarding
Whether you’re taking on new employees, clients or suppliers, having clear and consistent onboarding processes is important. Good onboarding can help ensure everyone understands their role, responsibilities and expectations from the outset.

Scalability
As your business grows, your financial and operational processes need to grow with it. Consider whether your existing systems, processes and resources can support your ambitions, and identify where changes may be needed to achieve sustainable growth.

MTD deadline: 7th August (Tomorrow)

If you haven't managed to submit your MTD quarterly update yet, don't panic – here's why.

From the 2027/28 tax year, HMRC will introduce a penalty points system for Making Tax Digital for Income Tax, similar to the system already used for VAT. However, during the 2026/27 tax year, this penalty points system is not yet in place.

Under the new system:

1 penalty point will be issued for each late quarterly submission.
2 penalty points will be issued for a late annual submission (previously your Self Assessment tax return).
Once you reach 4 penalty points, you'll receive a £200 penalty, followed by an additional £200 penalty for each further late submission while you're at the threshold.

Although you may not receive penalty points this year, it's still important to build good habits and aim to meet HMRC's deadlines wherever possible.

Don't rush to submit an inaccurate return just to meet the deadline. It's far better to take the time to ensure your figures are correct and submit accurate information.

Having a great business idea is exciting, but focusing solely on the idea itself can sometimes mean overlooking other essential elements needed to build a successful business. Equally important is surrounding yourself with the right people and choosing trusted advisers who can support you throughout your journey.

Starting a business brings many challenges, and managing finances is often one of the most demanding. Mistakes can be easy to make and difficult to put right, particularly when it comes to accounting and tax.
