🚨 Heads up if you're self-employed or a landlord — this MTD stuff is sneaking up on people!

I’ve chatted with loads of business owners lately who are confused about the £50,000 threshold for Making Tax Digital (MTD) coming in April… and honestly, it’s easy to get wrong.

So let’s clear it up 👇

That £50,000 limit? It’s based on income, not profit. Yep, even if your actual earnings are way lower after expenses, you could still be pulled into quarterly MTD returns.

Example time:
💷 Say you make £50,001 in sales but spend £30,000 on costs.
➡ Your profit is only £20,001, but you still have to do MTD.

And it’s not just your business income. Rental income counts too. So if you’re making:
🏠 £24k from property
💻 £30k from self-employment
➡ That’s £54k total income, and you’re in.

Even if neither source hits £50k on its own, it’s the combined total that matters.

And just so you know, the threshold is dropping:
📉 £30k from April 2027
📉 £20k from April 2028

So if you’re self-employed or renting out property, this is coming for you sooner or later. Best to get ahead of it now rather than panic later.
