Could gaps in your National Insurance record affect your State Pension?

HMRC has confirmed that around 800,000 self-employed taxpayers may have missing Class 2 National Insurance records due to an administrative issue affecting those who became self-employed between 2015 and March 2024. Missing NI contributions could impact entitlement to the State Pension and certain contributory benefits.

HMRC is working to identify affected individuals and plans to enhance its online State Pension forecast service to help taxpayers check for any gaps.

If you've been self-employed since 2015, now is a good time to stay informed and review your NI position when HMRC's updated tools become available.
