Selling online? Freelancing? Creating content? Providing services on the side?

Your side hustle could have tax implications.

HMRC's £1,000 trading allowance remains an important threshold. If your total income from trading activities exceeds £1,000 during the tax year, you may need to register for Self Assessment and declare your income.

It's also worth remembering that selling unwanted personal possessions isn't generally the same as running a business.

The important thing is to understand what you're actually doing and keep proper records from the start.

If your side hustle is becoming more than just a hobby, it may be time to review your tax position.

Tax headlines can be hard to keep up with, but not everything you read is law. With a number of potential tax reforms currently being discussed, it's important for business owners, landlords and investors to distinguish between:

✔ Confirmed changes
✔ Proposed changes
✔ Consultation-stage measures
✔ Pure speculation

If you're considering a property sale, business disposal or succession planning, now could be a good time to review your plans rather than making rushed decisions based on headlines.

Good tax planning starts with understanding what is actually changing, and what isn't.

If you're unsure how potential changes could affect your plans, we're happy to help.

Mileage claims aren't just about fuel, they're about staying tax compliant too.

HMRC publishes advisory fuel rates to help employers reimburse employees using company cars for business travel.

Using the correct rates can:

✔ Avoid unnecessary tax charges.
✔ Keep reimbursements fair.
✔ Help businesses stay compliant.

It's worth reviewing your mileage policies regularly to make sure they're still up to date.

AI tools like GOV.UK Chat are making it easier to find official tax information.

They're great for:
1. Understanding basic tax rules.
2. Finding HMRC guidance.
3. Learning about common tax topics.

However, AI can't understand every business situation and shouldn't replace professional advice for complex tax matters.

Think of AI as a useful starting point, not the final answer.

Here's a tax fact you may not know...

Charging your electric vehicle at home generally benefits from the reduced 5% VAT rate.

Charging at a public charging point, however, is currently treated as standard-rated for VAT by HMRC.

This difference continues to be debated, but for now it's important for businesses and EV drivers to understand how the rules apply.

Making Tax Digital (MTD) isn't simply about moving records online, it's changing how many self-employed people and landlords manage their finances. Instead of waiting until the end of the tax year, you'll need to:

- Keep digital records.
- Update them regularly.
-Submit quarterly updates to HMRC using compatible software.

Keeping on top of your bookkeeping throughout the year can make tax time far less stressful.

Many businesses offer employee benefits without realising how much administration they involve.

With HMRC moving towards mandatory payrolling of Benefits in Kind, now is a great time to ask yourself:

✅ Which benefits do we provide?
✅ How are they currently reported?
✅ Is our payroll software ready for future changes?

Planning ahead can make the transition much smoother and reduce the risk of costly errors.

Not sure where to start? Our team is here to help: https://rsaccountant.co.uk/contact-us/

Did you know that the way employers report Benefits in Kind is changing?

From April 2027, many benefits (including company cars, fuel, vans and private medical insurance) will need to be reported through payroll instead of annual P11Ds.

What does this mean for employers?
✔ Tax will be calculated throughout the year.
✔ Payroll accuracy will become even more important.
✔ Mistakes may need correcting in real time instead of after the tax year ends.

While the changes are still some way off, reviewing your payroll processes now can save time and stress later.
