Leaving your tax return until the last few weeks before the January 31st deadline could backfire.
If you need to request documents from financial institutions there might be a lead time on the delivery of these. Also, you might provide everything you think is relevant to your tax return to your accountant, but they may need a few extra bits of information from you.
HMRC issue fines to anyone who files their tax return after 31st January deadline, regardless of whether you have tax to pay or not. Starting with a £100 immediate late filing penalty, and increasing thereafter until the tax is paid.
