Sole traders make up 57% of all private-sector businesses in the UK, and many are also still carrying 100% of the financial and tax burdens that come with working for yourself.

With Phase 1 of Making Tax Digital now officially live, tax administration has just gone up a notch.

If your gross income is tracking over the upcoming thresholds, managing everything on a spreadsheet is no longer compliant or realistic.

Working with specialist sole trader accountants like us isn’t just about keeping HMRC happy; it is also about reclaiming hours of your time, maximising your allowable expenses and having complete peace of mind that you’re not going to be met with any costly penalties.

As the first Making Tax Digital (MTD) deadline moves closer, the questions I’m receiving more frequently are about what will happen when a deadline is missed.

Under MTD, HMRC has transitioned to a points-based penalty system designed to penalise persistent lateness rather than occasional errors. Here is a breakdown of how the new system will operate:

For each late submission, one penalty point will be issued. Once you reach a specific point threshold (determined by your filing frequency) a £200 fine will be issued.

Generally, no penalty is applied if the tax is paid within 15 days of the due date. After this grace period, percentage-based penalties and interest will build.

If you think you will struggle to meet a deadline, I’d always recommend being proactive and contacting HMRC to propose a Time to Pay arrangement.

While this may calm some nerves, I can’t recommend anything more than getting your accounts in order now. My role is to help streamline your financial processes and prevent you from ever missing a deadline.

A positive change for North East innovators and creatives. 💡

If your business claims tax credits for Research and Development, Tech, or Creative projects, a helpful tax change is on the way.

Right now, receiving these credits can accidentally push your company's profits over the £1.5 million mark. When that happens, HMRC forces you to pay your Corporation Tax early in quarterly instalments, which can really hurt your cash flow.

Next April, the Government will stop counting these innovation credits toward that profit limit. This means you won't be penalised with early tax bills just for investing in your business's growth and creativity.

Despite this coming into effect next year, planning your cash flow now is smart business. Contact our helpful team for support with understanding how this will affect your next tax return.

Landlords and sole traders, are you ready for the 7th August? ⌛

The very first Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax quarterly deadline will be here in one month. If your self-employment or property income was over £50,000 this quarter, you should already be keeping your records digitally.

Instead of scrambling for one massive annual Self-Assessment, the new system requires a summary update of your income and expenses every three months using HMRC-compatible digital software.

There’s no need to panic but there’s also no need to delay. Getting your software set up correctly now means your August submission will be as simple as hitting a button.

Need support with migrating records or still hitting a blank with everything MTD? Get in touch with our friendly team to get your business prepared.

HMRC is looking for your feedback. 🗨️

The Government has launched an official call for evidence regarding PAYE Settlement Agreements (PSAs). If your business uses PSAs to handle minor, irregular, or festive benefits for your team, this is your opportunity to voice where the rules feel too complicated.

Their goal is to find out where the admin pains lie, so they can simplify things for small businesses and employers moving forward. The deadline to submit evidence is the 15th September this year.

If you have questions about your current PSA setup, get in touch with our team today!

Changes are coming to self-assessment tax returns from the 2025/26 tax year. 📋

HMRC is introducing new reporting requirements for self-employed individuals and directors of close companies, meaning additional information will need to be included on tax returns.

This could include details such as trade start and end dates, close company information, dividend income received, and percentage shareholdings.

While the changes aim to improve accuracy and compliance, they may increase the administrative burden for some taxpayers. Keeping your records accurate and up to date will be more important than ever.

At One Two One Accounts, we help business owners and directors stay compliant and prepared for HMRC reporting changes.

If you're unsure how these new rules could affect you, get in touch with our team today.
