Running a business in Wick or Caithness isn't always easy. There are opportunities to grow, but also challenges that can sometimes be difficult to see when you're busy dealing with the day-to-day running of your business.

One simple tool that can help is a SWOT analysis.

💪 STRENGTHS
What is your business really good at? What makes customers choose you? Your experience, reputation, loyal customers, quality of service or specialist knowledge could all be strengths.

🔍 WEAKNESSES
What could be improved? Are you spending too much time on paperwork? Is your bookkeeping behind? Are there areas where your business could be more efficient?

🚀 OPPORTUNITIES
Where could you grow? Could you introduce a new service, reach new customers, employ someone, invest in equipment or expand into a new market?

⚠️ THREATS
What could affect your business? Rising costs, increased competition, changes in tax or legislation, staff shortages or changing customer demand are all worth considering.

At MM A&A Ltd, we don't believe accounting should simply be about completing your accounts and telling you how much tax you owe.

Your financial information can help you understand your business, make better decisions and plan for the future.

If you are a business owner in Wick, Caithness or the wider Highlands, and you would like to understand your numbers better, we're here to help.

A little update from MM A&A Ltd 💙

Many of you will remember that our office on Wick High Street was unfortunately affected by flooding, which meant that we had to move our office to the Airport Industrial Estate.

At the time, we thought the move would only be temporary and that we would be back on the High Street fairly quickly.

Unfortunately, things haven't gone quite as planned, and it now looks like we won't be returning to the High Street anytime soon.

Although it wasn't a move we planned, our new location has allowed us to continue supporting our clients without interruption. We are still here, working with businesses and individuals across Wick, Caithness and the wider Highlands.

So, if you've been looking for us — we haven't disappeared! 😄

🌟 Hey self-employed friends! 🌟

Big changes for self-employed tax reporting are coming on 6th April 2026! 🗓️

If you run your own business or do freelance work, now’s the perfect time to:

✅ Check your income & expenses
✅ Make sure your records are up to date
✅ Plan ahead for your tax return

Many people end up overpaying taxes without even realizing it. Sometimes it’s worth thinking about other tax options — there could be smarter ways to structure things and save money.

From 6th April 2026, Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax kicks in:

Self-employed and landlords with income over £50,000 must keep digital records

Submit 4 quarterly updates online using MTD-compatible software

File the final declaration at the end of the tax year

It’s nothing scary — just a new way HMRC wants things done. But trust us, sorting it now will save you headaches later!

Key Points From the New Budget – What It Means for Scotland

The UK Government has announced its Autumn Budget, and although income tax in Scotland is set separately by the Scottish Government, several measures will still affect Scottish taxpayers. Here are the main takeaways:

• Scottish Income Tax band changes start on 6 April 2026
- Starter and Basic rate thresholds will increase slightly, giving lower earners a small tax benefit.
- Higher, Advanced and Top rate thresholds will remain frozen, meaning more people may move into higher tax bands as wages increase.

• Dividend and savings taxes will rise (applies across the whole UK)
- Dividend tax rates will go up by 2 percentage points.
- Taxes on savings and investment income will also increase.

• Pension salary-sacrifice relief will change from 2029
- Only the first £2,000 of salary-sacrifice pension contributions will be exempt from National Insurance.
- Contributions above this amount will attract NIC.

• What does this mean in practice?

- Most Scottish taxpayers will see no major changes until April 2026.
- Those on lower incomes may benefit from slightly higher tax thresholds.
- Investors and individuals with dividend or savings income will see increased tax bills.
- Higher earners using salary-sacrifice should prepare for changes in 2029.
