Making Tax Digital Update — September 2026 📢
HMRC is now starting to sign up people who are required to use Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax for the 2026–27 tax year but have not yet signed themselves up.
This applies where HMRC's records show qualifying income from self-employment and property was over £50,000 in the 2024–25 tax year. HMRC says the automatic sign-up process will take place in stages over the coming months, and it will contact people after they have been signed up.
If HMRC hasn't signed you up yet, you can still sign up yourself or ask your agent to do it. HMRC specifically points out an advantage of doing this yourself: you can make sure your income sources and latest circumstances are correct from the start.
Once you're using MTD for Income Tax, you'll need compatible software to maintain digital records, send quarterly updates and complete the relevant tax-return process.
Not sure whether MTD applies to you or what you need to do next?
