The Khulo Drama Theatre was created as a result of a play performed in a school hall directed by the famous director Siko Dolidze. The success of drama in the village caught the attention of the district's authorities who granted the village funds to build their own theatre. The building officially opened as the ‘Public Drama Theatre’ in 1937. As many theatres in Georgia, the 'Public Drama Theatre
' closed 1952 on orders from the Soviet authorities. This new direction opened the theatre for all to join on and off stage. Through the 60s, the Folk Theatre thrived with plays performed by the local community such as Pridon Khalvashi’s City of Wine (directed by Suliko Tavartkiladze). This play was presented at the Tbilisi festival and received the award of best director. In 1977, 'Khulo’s Folk Theatre' received the award for ‘Best Play’ for Khatije. Through its history, the Khulo Drama Theatre saw passing through its stage famous Georgian actors such as: Spartak Bagashvili , Zura berikashvili , Lia Eliava , Iusup Zoidze , Guram Jashi , and Kote Tolordava. In 1992, the theatre became a professional theatre with full casts on payroll and was re-named againg as the Khulo Drama Theatre. This was thanks to theatre director Suliko Tavartkiladze and his vision. Since its opening, the theatre produced over 170 new works. Today the Khulo Drama Theatre is headed by Roin Surmanidze whose vision is to connect locals and regional and international audiences with modern Georgian new writing.
