📢 Understanding Rule 88B of GST – Interest on Delayed Payment of Tax

Many taxpayers are unaware that the calculation of interest under GST has been clarified through Rule 88B of the CGST Rules.

✅ What does Rule 88B say?

Interest under Section 50(1) is payable only on the portion of tax paid through the Electronic Cash Ledger and not on the tax liability discharged through Input Tax Credit (ITC), subject to prescribed conditions.

📌 Practical Example:

A taxpayer has GST liability of ₹1,00,000 for April 2026 and files GSTR-3B 20 days late.

Tax Payment Details:
• ITC Available: ₹80,000
• Cash Payment Required: ₹20,000

👉 Under Rule 88B, interest is generally calculated only on the ₹20,000 paid through the Electronic Cash Ledger and not on the entire tax liability, subject to applicable conditions.

From 15 June 2026, major changes in the E-Way Bill System will become mandatory for all taxpayers and transporters. Non-compliance may lead to penalties, delays, and operational issues.

Here are the key changes you must know 👇

✅ Ship-To GSTIN Mandatory
In Bill-To / Ship-To transactions, mentioning the Ship-To GSTIN will now be compulsory.

✅ Use “URP” for Unregistered Consignee
If the consignee is unregistered under GST, “URP” must be mentioned in the E-Way Bill.

✅ E-Way Bill Closure Mandatory After Delivery
Once goods are delivered, the E-Way Bill must be closed properly.

✅ Who Can Close the E-Way Bill?
Closure can be done by:
• Supplier
• Transporter
• Recipient
• Authorized Driver

✅ Closure Timeline Introduced
E-Way Bills should be closed on the same day or next day after delivery completion.
