When is ITR Filing Mandatory?
For salaried individuals in India, filing an Income Tax Return (ITR) is generally mandatory if your gross total income exceeds the basic exemption limit for the applicable financial year.
Basic Exemption Limits

Late Filing Penalties (Section 234F)
Up to βΉ5,000 β If the return is filed after the due date but on or before 31st December 2026.
Up to βΉ10,000 β If the return is filed after 31st December 2026.
Reduced fee of βΉ1,000 β If your total income does not exceed βΉ5,00,000.
Interest under Section 234A
In addition to the late filing fee, interest at 1% per month or part of a month may be charged on any outstanding tax liability from the due date until the date of filing.
