Franchise Fee vs. Royalty Fee: What Every New Franchisee Needs to Know Before Signing
Thinking about buying a franchise? Before you sign anything, make sure you understand these two costs: the initial franchise fee (a one-time, upfront payment of $25K–$65K to join the franchise system) and royalty fees (an ongoing payment of 5–9% of your gross sales, for as long as you operate the business).
One gets you in the door. The other is a cost you'll pay for the life of your agreement.
Both are disclosed in your Franchise Disclosure Document — the initial fee in Item 5, royalties in Item 6 — but the document alone won't tell you how these numbers stack up against similar franchises, or what other fees might be hiding in the fine print (marketing, tech, renewal, transfer fees, and more).
This is exactly why so many experienced franchisees hire a franchise lawyer before signing. It's a lot cheaper to ask questions upfront than to discover unfavorable terms after you've already committed.
