If your income stopped tomorrow, how long could your family manage with the money you have today?

It’s a practical question every earning member should think about, especially when the family depends on one income to pay the bills, repay loans and fund future goals.

Let’s say your family spends ₹80,000 a month. That’s ₹9.6 lakh a year. If your income stopped, your family would still need money for household expenses, children’s education, loan repayments and other commitments.

When calculating your life insurance needs, start with these numbers:

Annual family expenses: How much does your family need to maintain its current lifestyle?

Outstanding loans: What would need to be repaid?

Future goals: How much will be needed for education and other important commitments?

Existing resources: What savings, investments or other assets could your family use?

Add the financial needs and subtract the resources available. The remaining amount gives you a starting point for estimating the life cover required.

Also consider how many years your family may need financial support and whether the cover can account for future expenses and inflation.

Your life insurance should reflect the financial responsibilities your family would have to manage without your income.

Calculate your family’s financial gap before deciding how much life cover to buy.

Your health insurance covers ₹10 lakh. But could your room choice affect how much the insurer pays?

Let’s take an example.

Suppose your policy has a room-rent limit of ₹5,000 per day, but you choose a room costing ₹10,000 per day.

You might think, “I’ll pay the extra ₹5,000 myself.”

However, if your policy includes a proportionate deduction clause, the insurer may also reduce its share of certain associated hospital expenses. The exact impact depends on your policy’s terms and conditions.

That’s why checking your sum insured alone isn’t enough. Read the room-rent limit, proportionate deduction clause and other policy restrictions before you need to make a claim.

Save this post and check what your health insurance policy actually covers.

You get your blood tests done every year. When did your investments last get a check-up?

Most of us get a health check-up every year, but our investments can go five or ten years without a single review. In this short video, Mahesh Pai explains how one review can catch problems early, before they turn into financial shocks.

Retirement is something many of us look forward to. More time with family, travelling, pursuing interests and finally having the freedom to decide how we spend our days.

But have you thought about how you will pay for that lifestyle when your salary stops?

Your regular expenses will continue. Healthcare costs may rise. And with inflation, the same amount of money will buy less over time.

That’s why retirement planning needs to start well before you turn 60.

Begin by estimating your future monthly expenses, accounting for inflation, and working out how much retirement income you may need. Then review your savings, investments and other income sources to see whether they can support those needs.

You don’t have to figure out the entire plan in one day. Start with the numbers you know and build from there.

What would you like your life after 60 to look like? Start planning for the expenses that will make it possible.

You may have planned for your home, your children’s education, family holidays and retirement. But have you planned for these goals if your income is no longer there?

When your family depends on your earnings, those future plans depend on that income too. Home loan EMIs, school fees, household expenses and long-term goals will still need financial support.

That’s where life insurance comes in. Adequate life cover can help your family manage these responsibilities if you are no longer around to provide for them.

As your life changes, your insurance needs can change too. A new home loan, a growing family or higher education costs may mean your existing cover needs a review.

Take 15 minutes this week to review your life insurance. Add up your family’s future expenses, outstanding loans and major goals. Then account for your existing savings and other available resources to estimate how much cover your family may need.

If you already have a policy, check whether it still meets that need. If you don’t, make calculating your required cover the first step.

Don’t leave your family’s financial protection to guesswork.

Your child’s education is only the beginning. As they grow, their dreams may grow too — higher studies, studying abroad, exploring new opportunities or building a career they love.

Each of these goals can come with a significant financial commitment. And when the time comes, you may have a fixed deadline to arrange the money.

That’s why starting early can make a real difference.

For example, if your child is still young, you have more time to build an education fund through regular investments. You can start with an amount that fits your budget and increase it as your income grows.

Keep reviewing the plan as education costs rise and your child’s goals become clearer. Remember that mutual fund returns are market-linked, so your investment choices should match the time available and the risk you can take.

Start with these three steps:

Estimate the future cost of your child’s education.

Decide when you will need the money.

Work out how much you need to invest each month to work towards that goal.

Your child’s dreams may change over time. Having a financial plan gives you a starting point to prepare for them.

Retirement expenses don’t stay the same just because your salary has stopped.

The cost of groceries, medicines, healthcare and everyday needs can keep rising long after you retire. A corpus that looks sufficient today may not stretch as far as you expect 15 or 20 years from now.

That’s why your retirement plan needs to account for more than the amount you want to save.

Check these five things:

1- Have you estimated your future expenses after accounting for inflation?

2- Will your retirement corpus last throughout your expected retirement years?

3- Is your investment mix suited to both long-term growth and your need for stability?

4- Have you planned for rising medical expenses?

5- Can your retirement income keep up with increasing costs?

Your retirement corpus needs to support your lifestyle for years, while your expenses continue to change.

Review your retirement plan today, so your future income is planned around the costs you may actually face.

Many people with ₹5 crore or ₹10 crore in assets still hesitate before booking a holiday.

Not because they can't afford it. Because they don't know what they're allowed to spend.

Their property, funds and FDs are all reserved for the future, so nothing feels safe to use today.

Wealth and liquidity are not the same thing. A good plan tells you what funds your expenses, what you can withdraw, and what stays invested.
