How to identify errors in your CRB credit report. (Pt.1)

Section #1: Personal Information

1.Personal Information Errors
-Wrong name listed
-Addresses you've never lived at or used as a mailing address
-Inaccurate employer information
2.Ensure that your name is correctly displayed and that any alternative names or alias are accurate.

3.Ensure your year of birth is accurate. Again, an error in this section of your credit report could mean that you are being confused with another consumer.

4.Ensure that there are no addresses where you have never lived or employers that you have never worked for listed in the respective sections

Section #2: Credit Summary

1.The purpose of this section is to provide a quick snapshot of your current and prior credit history.
2. Ensure that the number of accounts of a specific type, total accounts or total balances don’t seem higher than they should be.
3. In case of any inaccuracies in any area of the credit summary section, kindly check the account history of your credit report which will have more detailed information on an account by account basis.

4.This will help you further investigate whether or not your credit report contains errors.

Section #3: Accounts

1.Ensure that the information in this section is accurate. Pay especially close attention to any information related to delinquency, collections or past due accounts. All of these things negatively impact your credit report and credit score.

2.Make sure all of your accounts in good standing are represented.
3.Not all creditors report account data to all credit bureaus, so if you don’t see an account that you believe to be in good standing then contact your creditor and ask them if they report your account information .
4.Make sure you recognize all of the creditors and accounts listed in this section.

WHAT TYPE OF DEBTOR ARE YOU?

Type 1: Able and Willing

-The debt arises out of an error or by forgetting to clear the outstanding amount.
-The outstanding debt amount you owe is insignificant less than your monthly repayment amount for other loans.
-Example: a mortgage customer or an active borrower listed for an outstanding Mshwari debt or ledger fees.
-Recommendation: Check your credit report regularly to identify such debts in good time.

Type 2: Able but Unwilling

-You are aware of the debt, have the ability to pay the debt but you are just unwilling to pay.
-It arises from dissatisfaction with service, adamancy or disagreement on the amount,
-Example:An employee who is unwilling to repay HELB loan due to the fact that it is government money.
-Recommendation: Contact your lender to present your dispute.

Type 3: Unable but Willing

-You are aware of the debt but not you have no financial ability to pay
-The debt arises due to financial obligations or other debts or loss of a source of income /job.,
-You have the desire to pay but no ability.
-Example: Defaulting on a mortgage or bank loan after a job loss.
-Recommendation: Discuss with your debtor why you cannot pay and what you pay.

Type 4: Unable and Unwilling

-The debt arises out of a deficit out of a sale of a collateral.
-The debtor may have lost his job but the actions taken by the lender thereafter makes him adamant.
-Example: a job seeker who is unwilling to repay HELB loan due to the fact that it is government money.
-Recommendation: failure to pay the debt is not a solution. Instead contact your lender with your repayment plan.

Dispelling the common myths about your information at the CRB

1. Myth: I have never taken a loan,therefore I have a clean credit history

Fact: If you have never taken any loan facility, it means that you have no credit history yet. You have not demonstrated whether given a loan or a credit facility you can pay back and promptly
Therefore to have a credit history, you have to open a credit account to establish a line of credit that will become the foundation of your credit history.

2. Myth: No credit record at the bureau means clean or good credit history

Fact: If you have never taken a loan facility but have defaulted on other utility debts such as water, electricity and even power, that credit history will not reflect at the bureau.
Therefore in such a case, absence of a credit record on you at the bureau cannot be assumed to be a good credit history but only an indication that either, you have never taken a loan facility with a lender or had taken and repaid promptly.

3. Myth: Bad credit history means no access to future loan facilities
Fact: If you may have defaulted on your loans, your lenders will submit the information also termed as negative information to a credit reference bureau so that it can be shared with other credit providers.
This will then be part of your credit history but this does not mean that you cannot access any further loan facility from any lending institution.
All it means is that whenever you approach any lender, they will take extra caution in their decision due to the degree of risk in lending to you. Based on their own credit policies, the lenders can either lend you on tight conditions or deny you credit.

4. Myth: Keeping off from loan transactions will keep my credit history clean

Fact: A clean credit history is based on your borrowing wisely and paying promptly.
Credit transactions with positive repayment history will go towards enriching your credit history and your credit report. The longer the credit history, the more useful is the credit report to lenders.

5. Myth: With good credit history, no collateral is required on loan applications

Fact: Collateral requirements are solely at the discretion of the lender and their credit policies. However, With a detailed credit report that is full file; one that contains both positive, negative and information from other sources, you as the borrower could benefit from lower interest rates, affordable repayment terms or less collateral. For good payers a detailed credit report will become good collateral to lenders.

6. Myth: Credit Reference Bureaus make lending decision for banks

Fact: All lending decisions are still made by the lenders.
Lenders will only use your credit report generated from a bureau as part of their lending decision process. Such reports only act as a guide to them, to make informed credit decisions on a good or bad risk.

7. Myth: CRB is a dispute or complaint resolution point for borrowers on declined loan applications

Fact:There is a notion that the CRB acts as a point to report their disputes or complaints on declined loan applications by lenders. This is not true.
Every lender has its own policies on the acceptable risk levels which they can take up. In case your application for a loan facility has been declined by a lender exclusively based on the information provided on a credit report, then you as the borrower are entitled to receive communication from the bank on the basis of the decision.

8. Myth: Credit Bureaus can auction your things for loan non-payment

Fact: This is false. Credit Bureaus are data hubs that hold information regarding your credit history. We supply lenders with this information as well as solutions to manage risk. We are NOT auctioneers!

How to avoid pitfalls of adverse listing. (Pt.1)

1. Abandoning a bank account

-Many bank customers believe that the best option to close a bank account is to abandon it and render it dormant without taking the necessary procedure of account closure as stipulated by the bank.
-If such bank accounts have monthly ledger fees charges, they will continue running even after being abandoned. The first few months before becoming dormant, the account holder would be charged a monthly ledger fees and the account debited with same amount.
-Failure to repay the outstanding fees, the account holder will be
adversely blacklisted in the bureau for defaulting without any
notice.

2. Breach of a standing order

-Any breach of a standing order for instance not depositing the
account with the required amount to effect the order attracts a
penalty fees which varies from one bank to another.
-This may accumulate over a period of time especially where the
bank customer fails to formally stop the effect of the standing order to the extent of the account of being overdrawn instigating an adverse listing of the account in to the credit reference bureau.
