As Kenya pursues its industrialization agenda, access to affordable, reliable, and high-quality electricity remains one of the most critical enablers of manufacturing competitiveness.

Today, Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM) in partnership with Kenya Power convened a Nairobi region manufacturers and large power consumers forum to discuss opportunities and challenges in the country's energy landscape.

The engagement underscored the direct link between power supply and industrial productivity with a special focus on power affordability, reliability, predictability, and quality. During the forum, manufacturers noted that frequent unplanned outages and voltage fluctuations continue to disrupt production processes, damage sensitive equipment, increase operational costs, and affect delivery timelines. For manufacturers operating continuous production lines, a brief interruption can translate into significant financial losses, wastage of raw materials, missed market opportunities, and reduced competitiveness.

Speaking during the forum, KAM Chief Executive, Tobias Alando, appreciated the sustained engagement between industry and Kenya Power, noting that it provides a platform for identifying practical solutions that support industrial expansion and improve the business environment.

A key concern raised by manufacturers was the growing occurrence of unplanned outages and the need for enhanced communication and transparency around power interruptions. Predictability in power supply allows businesses to plan operations, mitigate losses, and maintain productivity.

Responding to the concerns, Eng Rosemary Oduor, Kenya Power General Manager for Commercial and Services & Sales highlighted their commitment to improving service delivery through continued investment in infrastructure, grid modernization, and smart metering technologies. She noted that over 90% of large power consumers are now connected to smart meters, enabling access to real-time consumption data and supporting better energy management.

Eng David Ngua Syengo, Kenya Power Ag. General Manager, Network Management, highlighted ongoing efforts to strengthen network performance through enhanced power quality monitoring and voltage regulation.

The forum also featured a panel discussion with Amit Shah, Director Ashut Engineers & Ashut Plastics, Jackson Anakadi, Ramco Group, Eng. Raphael Ndolo, Regional Manager, Distribution Networks, Eng. Hicks Waswa, Nairobi Region Manager, Kenya Power and Eng. Dalton Langat, Manager, Sales Kenya Power.

Strengthening collaboration between manufacturers and energy providers will be critical in unlocking productivity, attracting investment, creating jobs, and accelerating the country's journey towards sustainable economic growth.

Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM) held a consultative meeting with the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) at the Port of Mombasa to discuss port logistics challenges affecting the competitiveness of the manufacturing sector.

The meeting was convened in response to persistent logistics challenges affecting manufacturers, including delays in vessel berthing, container discharge, yard operations, cargo transfer, and rail transportation to KPA-operated Inland Container Depots in Nairobi, Naivasha, Kisumu, and Eldoret, as well as nominated CFSs. These inefficiencies have contributed to increased costs and reduced supply chain efficiency for manufacturers.

The meeting was chaired by Mr. Geoffrey Kavate, General Manager, Finance and Commercial Services, who represented the Chief Executive Officer, Capt. William Ruto. KAM was represented by KAM Board Director and Infrastructure Committee Chair, Mr. Rashid Mohamed, and KAM Coast Region Chair, Mr. Abdalla Athmann.

KAM emphasized the need for continued collaboration to address logistics challenges affecting supply chains. Mr. Mohammed noted that manufacturers depend heavily on efficient port operations, timely cargo handling, and predictable clearance processes. While acknowledging the progress made by KPA, he emphasized the need to translate these gains into lower logistics costs and enhanced competitiveness for manufacturers.

Some of the key outcomes from the meeting include:
▪️KPA appreciated the constructive feedback and recommendations presented by KAM and acknowledged their potential to enhance cargo movement efficiency and productivity at the Port of Mombasa and Inland Container Depots (ICDs).
▪️KPA committed to prioritize the movement of members’ containers while addressing existing backlogs to enhance manufacturers’ competitiveness.
▪️KPA and KAM agreed to hold quarterly engagements to review progress, address emerging issues, and track implementation of agreed actions.

Positive progress was noted on key issues, including cargo scanners, synchronization of KPA and Kenya Railways Corporation (KRC) operational shifts, completion of smart gates, and proposals to facilitate evacuation of containers pending scanning for trusted operators, transit cargo, and cargo destined for ICD clearance.

KAM remains committed to partnering with KPA in advancing initiatives that enhance cargo movement efficiency, facilitate trade, and improve the competitiveness of manufacturers operating in Kenya and the wider region.

Insurance costs play a significant role in determining the competitiveness of the manufacturing sector. As such, maintaining affordable and predictable premiums is essential to achieving the Manufacturing Priority Agenda 2026 pillars of global competitiveness and export-led industrialization.

KAM has today paid a courtesy call on the Commissioner of Insurance and CEO of the Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA), Godfrey Kiptum, to discuss key issues affecting the manufacturing sector. Among the matters raised was the recent increase in insurance premiums, which continues to place a significant financial burden on manufacturers.

During the meeting, we expressed concern about the steep premium adjustments. According to available industry data, these adjustments are not supported by evidence that manufacturers pose a significant risk to the sector. The changes have been applied uniformly, even to manufacturers who have complied with regulatory requirements and undertaken risk assessments. KAM Chief Executive, Tobias Alando, noted that these increases lack actuarial justification, and treating all manufacturers as high risk is not evidence-based. Such an approach risks raising regulatory and compliance burdens, increasing production costs, and ultimately affecting consumer prices and the sector’s competitiveness locally, regionally, and globally. He, therefore:

- Proposed a review and adjustment of the current rating structure to allow for differentiated pricing.
-Emphasized the need for rates that reflect facts, are evidence-based, and do not appear punitive.

IRA committed to reviewing insurance rates annually to help ensure that the sector remains competitive, while maintaining the sustainability of the insurance industry.

The discussions also addressed the implementation of the local Marine Insurance Directive that mandates that all cargo imported into the country must be insured by locally licensed insurance companies. Some of the concerns drawn from this directive include the risk of double insurance, for goods insured under foreign policies. This directive is also expensive due to less competitive local insurance rates. To address concerns and enhance understanding among stakeholders, IRA proposed a sensitization program on the directive for manufacturers. As a strong advocate for localization, KAM will work closely with the regulator to facilitate dedicated engagement sessions for its members.

KAM remains committed to working with stakeholders to ensure that insurance policies support industrial growth, competitiveness, and sustainability.
