The issue of VAT on Petroleum products has been a topic of discussion for sometime now. We need to note two critical aspects here: Fuel is a source of energy by itself and a critical component in the production process , additionally VAT is a consumer Tax . That will mean it will be borne by the final consumers . As a result , such tax will be borne disproportionately by both the rich and the poor.We strongly call it disproportionately because the poor do not have similar financial muscles to bear the impact of the tax with the rich .
Yes the govt needs money to run ,function & support development projects,this money can be found through proper tax administration or through other areas rather than touching on a critical component like the case in point.
