Gold is heading into Friday’s U.S. employment report under renewed pressure. Spot gold fell 0.6% to $4,154.78 per ounce by 0205 GMT, while U.S. gold futures declined 0.4% to $4,184.00. The metal is down more than 3% for the week, putting it on track for a second consecutive weekly decline after September’s sharp sell-off. The immediate market focus is now firmly on the September U.S. nonfarm payrolls report, which could determine whether gold extends its decline or finds room for a recovery.

The unusual part of today’s market is that gold is falling even though expectations for an October Federal Reserve rate hike have collapsed. Cooler-than-expected U.S. inflation data released earlier this week showed that price pressures increased less than expected in August, while earlier inflation figures were revised lower. As a result, traders now see only about a 25% chance of an October rate increase, down sharply from roughly 70% a week ago. However, expectations for December remain much higher, with markets pricing around a 79% probability of another hike.

Importantly, the rise in long-term Treasury yields is no longer being driven entirely by expectations of an immediate Fed hike. Market analysts are increasingly pointing toward term premiums, government borrowing and fiscal concerns as reasons for the bond sell-off. That distinction matters for gold: even if the Fed delays another rate increase, bullion can remain under pressure if long-term yields continue climbing. The 10-year yield’s move toward a 24-year high has therefore become one of the most important developments for precious metals this week.

The U.S. jobs report later today could change that balance. Economists expect September nonfarm payrolls to increase by approximately 90,000, a significant slowdown from the 162,000 increase reported for August. The unemployment rate is expected to remain at 4.1%, while average hourly earnings are forecast to rise about 3.2% year over year. Investors will pay particular attention to wages because stronger wage growth could keep inflation concerns alive even if headline job creation is weak.

Gold is trading relatively flat on Thursday as investors pause after September’s sharp sell-off and turn their attention toward the next major U.S. economic signals. Spot gold was around $4,146.66 per ounce in early Asian trading, while December U.S. gold futures were around $4,177.00. The market is still recovering from Monday’s nearly 4% plunge to a seven-week low near $4,110, followed by a brief rebound and another decline at the end of September. The lack of a stronger recovery shows that traders remain cautious even after some of the pressure from Federal Reserve rate-hike expectations has eased.

The latest inflation data initially gave gold some support. U.S. personal consumption expenditures, the Federal Reserve’s preferred inflation measure, increased 0.3% in August, while core PCE rose 3.0% year over year. The figures were softer than markets had expected and reduced the immediate probability of another Fed rate increase in October. According to CME FedWatch pricing reported by Reuters, the probability of an October hike fell to roughly 39%, while the probability of a December hike remained around 90%. Gold briefly moved higher after the data, but the gains did not last as Treasury yields moved back up.

The reaction illustrates why inflation data alone is no longer enough to determine gold’s direction. Lower inflation normally helps bullion because it reduces expectations for higher interest rates, but investors are also dealing with unusually high government borrowing costs. The U.S. 10-year Treasury yield has remained above 5%, after recording its largest monthly increase since 2022 in September. The 10-year yield also recorded its biggest quarterly jump since 2009, creating a significant opportunity cost for investors holding an asset such as gold that does not pay interest.

The market is now shifting its attention from inflation to employment. The September U.S. nonfarm payrolls report is scheduled for Friday, making it the next major potential catalyst for gold. Investors will be looking at whether the labor market remains strong enough to give the Federal Reserve room to keep rates high, or whether signs of weakening employment could strengthen expectations for a pause.

Gold is showing signs of stabilization on Wednesday after one of its sharpest declines of the month. Spot gold was around $4,171.93 per ounce in Asian trading, down about 0.2% on the session, after rebounding roughly 1.6% on Tuesday to settle near $4,182.45. The recovery followed Monday’s nearly 4% plunge, which pushed gold to around $4,110, its lowest level since early August. The latest move suggests that some buyers are returning after the aggressive sell-off, although the market remains highly sensitive to U.S. interest-rate expectations.

One of the biggest changes has come from the oil market. Brent crude was around $103.16 a barrel on Wednesday, while U.S. crude was near $89.49, with both benchmarks easing substantially from the highs reached earlier in the week. Signs that some Middle Eastern oil flows are recovering have reduced fears of an immediate energy shortage. Saudi Arabia has increased flows through a key pipeline following repairs, helping offset some of the disruption caused by the continuing uncertainty around the Strait of Hormuz. Lower oil prices matter for gold because they reduce some of the inflation pressure that had been pushing investors toward expectations of additional Federal Reserve tightening.

The Federal Reserve story has also changed quickly. New York Fed President John Williams said Tuesday that there is “no need for urgency” following the Fed’s September rate increase and that policymakers can wait for more economic data before deciding on the next move. Williams said one additional rate increase later this year could be appropriate if the economy develops as expected, but his comments caused traders to significantly reduce expectations for an October hike. Markets that had recently been pricing roughly a 70% chance of an October increase are now putting the probability closer to 44%–50%.

Gold is therefore entering the final day of September with two competing forces. On one side, lower oil prices and reduced expectations of an immediate Fed hike are giving bullion some breathing room after its dramatic sell-off. On the other, Treasury yields remain extremely high, the dollar remains strong and inflation is still well above the Fed’s target. The next major test will come from U.S. economic data, particularly the PCE inflation report, followed by Friday’s nonfarm payrolls report. Strong inflation or employment figures could revive rate-hike expectations, while softer data could reinforce the recent shift toward waiting before another increase.

Gold is trying to stabilize on Tuesday after suffering its steepest decline in recent weeks. Spot gold edged up about 0.1% to $4,116.42 per ounce in early Asian trading, but remains near a seven-week low after falling as much as 4% on Monday to $4,110.55, its lowest level since August 5. U.S. gold futures were around $4,153.70.

The biggest pressure is coming from the bond market. The U.S. 10-year Treasury yield climbed above 5.27%, reaching its highest level in 19 years, while the two-year yield approached 5%. Traders are increasingly pricing the possibility of additional Federal Reserve rate increases, with markets estimating roughly a 70% probability of an October hike. Higher yields increase the opportunity cost of holding gold because the metal does not generate interest.

Oil is adding another layer of pressure. Brent crude was around $106.60 a barrel on Tuesday as uncertainty surrounding U.S.-Iran negotiations kept concerns about energy supplies and inflation elevated. Rising oil prices can feed directly into inflation, potentially giving the Federal Reserve more reason to maintain or increase interest rates rather than loosen policy.

The dollar is also working against bullion. The U.S. dollar index was around 101.2, close to a two-month high and on track for its strongest monthly performance since June. A stronger dollar makes gold more expensive for buyers using other currencies, adding to the selling pressure created by rising yields.

Gold came under renewed pressure on Monday as rising oil prices and a stronger outlook for U.S. interest rates pushed investors away from the non-yielding metal. Spot gold fell 1.5% to $4,223.95 per ounce by 0117 GMT, while U.S. gold futures dropped 1.5% to $4,257.90. The decline extends gold’s recent weakness, with bullion already down more than 4% this month as higher Treasury yields weigh on the market.

The biggest new pressure is coming from oil. Brent crude rose 1.6% to around $106 a barrel, while U.S. crude climbed above $93 a barrel as uncertainty surrounding U.S.-Iran negotiations returned to the market. Higher energy prices are raising concerns that inflation could remain elevated, making it harder for the Federal Reserve to ease financial conditions.

That has strengthened expectations for another U.S. rate increase. Markets are now pricing roughly a 66% chance of a Fed hike in October, following the central bank’s quarter-point increase earlier this month to a target range of 3.75%-4.00%. Higher rates and Treasury yields increase the opportunity cost of holding gold, while a stronger dollar makes the metal more expensive for international buyers.

The market is also entering an important U.S. data week. Investors will receive labor-market and inflation figures, including job openings, the ADP employment report, the PCE inflation index and Friday’s nonfarm payrolls report. Stronger-than-expected data could reinforce expectations for higher rates and keep pressure on gold, while weaker numbers could reduce those expectations.

Gold edged higher on Friday, but the move was not enough to prevent bullion from heading toward its first weekly decline. Spot gold rose 0.2% to $4,288.36 per ounce by 0200 GMT, while U.S. gold futures gained 0.6% to $4,323.10. Despite Friday's rebound, spot gold was still down around 2% for the week, leaving the metal under pressure after several volatile sessions.

The main pressure is coming from the U.S. bond market. Treasury yields have surged as investors increasingly expect the Federal Reserve to keep rates elevated, with the 10-year yield reaching around 5.20%, its highest level since 2007. The stronger dollar is also making gold more expensive for international buyers. Two Fed policymakers have indicated that another rate increase may be necessary to bring inflation back under control after last week's 25-basis-point hike to 3.75%-4.00%.

Oil has added another twist to the gold story. Crude prices jumped sharply on Thursday as U.S.-Iran negotiations showed little progress, raising concerns about energy supplies and inflation. On Friday, however, oil prices eased as markets reacted to the possibility of a truce. Brent was around $105.85 a barrel, while WTI stood near $93.80, leaving investors uncertain about whether the latest move represents a temporary pullback or the beginning of a broader reversal.

That matters because oil has become an indirect driver of gold. Higher energy prices can increase inflation and strengthen expectations for further Fed tightening, which hurts non-yielding gold. But a genuine U.S.-Iran agreement that lowers energy prices could reduce inflation pressure and eventually make the Fed's job easier. For now, negotiations remain uncertain, meaning gold traders are watching developments in the Middle East almost as closely as Fed policy.

Gold prices traded near $4,360 per ounce on Wednesday, with investors caught between easing inflation concerns and expectations that U.S. interest rates could remain higher for longer. Spot gold was little changed in early trading, while U.S. gold futures edged higher as markets searched for a clearer direction.

A major story this week has been the sharp decline in oil prices. Hopes for possible U.S.-Iran diplomacy and the restoration of some Middle East oil supplies have pushed crude lower, reducing fears of another inflation surge. Lower energy prices could ease pressure on the Federal Reserve to continue raising interest rates, offering some support to gold.

However, the Federal Reserve remains cautious about inflation. Several Fed officials have indicated that another rate increase is still possible after last week's 25-basis-point hike to 3.75%-4.00%. Higher interest rates and a stronger U.S. dollar continue to limit gold's upside because bullion does not provide interest income.

Another important factor supporting the gold market is strong demand from China. Chinese investors, central bank purchases and growing inflows into gold-backed ETFs have helped offset pressure from higher U.S. interest rates, providing a solid foundation for bullion prices.

Investors are now watching U.S. economic data, comments from Federal Reserve officials and developments in the Middle East for clues about gold's next move. For now, the market remains balanced between safe-haven demand, falling oil prices and the prospect of further monetary tightening.

Gold prices edged higher on Tuesday as easing U.S. Treasury yields provided some support to bullion, although expectations that the Federal Reserve could continue raising interest rates kept gains limited. Investors are also watching oil prices and developments in the Middle East for clues about inflation and the future path of U.S. monetary policy.

Spot gold was up 0.3% at $4,357.31 per ounce as of 0052 GMT, while U.S. gold futures for December delivery also gained 0.3% to $4,395.00. Later Reuters reporting showed spot gold holding around $4,344.29 per ounce, highlighting the relatively tight trading range as investors weigh competing economic and geopolitical forces.

St. Louis Fed President Alberto Musalem said the Federal Reserve may need to raise interest rates further to address inflation generated by strong demand and commodity-price shocks. His comments reinforced expectations that interest rates could remain elevated for longer, limiting gold's upside because higher-yielding assets become more attractive relative to non-interest-bearing bullion.

Markets are already assigning greater odds to another U.S. rate increase later this year. Reuters reported that traders were pricing a 56% probability of an October hike, up from 43.5% a week earlier. The U.S. dollar index was also near a seven-week high at around 100.4, creating another headwind for dollar-denominated gold.

Oil markets are also influencing gold through their impact on inflation expectations. Brent crude was around $100.57 per barrel, up 0.22%, at 0021 GMT on Tuesday, while WTI October futures were around $95.80 per barrel. The move followed several sessions of declines as investors awaited developments surrounding possible U.S.-Iran discussions at the United Nations General Assembly this week.
