17 financial documents worth keeping, and roughly how long to actually keep each one.
1. Tax returns. Keep for seven years, since that's the window the IRS can typically go back and audit.
2. Pay stubs. Keep for one year, until you've confirmed they match your annual tax documents.
3. Bank and credit card statements. Keep for one year, unless one supports a tax deduction, then keep it with your tax records.
4. Home purchase and sale records. Keep for as long as you own the home, plus several years after selling it.
5. Home improvement receipts. Keep for as long as you own the home, since they can affect your cost basis when you sell.
6. Investment account statements. Keep the annual summaries permanently, and the monthly ones only until they're reconciled.
7. Loan documents. Keep until the loan is fully paid off, then keep the payoff confirmation permanently.
8. Insurance policies. Keep the current policy always, and shred old ones once a new one is confirmed active.
9. Medical bills. Keep for at least one year, longer if there's an ongoing dispute or a tax deduction involved.
10. Warranties and receipts for major purchases. Keep until the warranty expires or the item is no longer owned.
11. Social Security statements. Keep the most recent one, and check it periodically for accuracy.
12. Retirement account statements. Keep the annual summaries permanently, especially any showing contribution history.
13. Wills and estate documents. Keep the current version permanently, and make sure someone else knows where it is.
14. Marriage, birth, and death certificates. Keep permanently, in a fireproof or secure location.
15. Vehicle titles and registration. Keep for as long as you own the vehicle.
16. Business records, if self-employed. Keep for at least seven years, matching the tax document rule.
17. Passwords and account access information. Keep updated and accessible to a trusted person, not just in your own head.
None of this needs to live in overflowing filing cabinets anymore. A scanned digital copy in a secure folder covers most of it.
Which of these do you actually have organized right now?
