✨More Reliefs This Year, But Also a New Tax to Watch

This year’s personal tax filing comes with expanded reliefs, but also an important new development that many taxpayers may overlook.

On the relief side, several categories have been widened or increased, including:
🔸Parent medical expenses now extended to grandparents
🔸Expanded sports-related lifestyle relief
🔸Higher relief limits for disabled individuals, spouses, and children
🔸Increased education and medical insurance relief
🔸Environmental sustainability relief expanded to include composting equipment
🔸New housing loan interest relief for qualifying first-time homebuyers

However, there is also a significant change.
Dividend income exceeding RM100,000 per year is now subject to a 2% tax.
Previously, dividends were fully exempt. This is the first year this rule applies, and many may not factor it in during filing.

On 24 February 2026, the Chartered Tax Institute of Malaysia (CTIM) hosted its Members’ Dialogue 2026 focusing on e-Invoicing Implementation Issues, engaging directly with LHDNM on the latest updates and implementation concerns.

If you’re a foreigner working or earning income in Malaysia, personal tax filing can be confusing, especially in your first year here.

Although filing deadlines fall towards the end of April, February is the right time to start preparing.

Here are three common misunderstandings we often see.

1️⃣Nationality does not determine your tax form
What matters is tax residency, not your passport.
🔸Tax residents generally file Form BE
🔸Non-residents generally file Form M
Many foreigners file the wrong form by assuming “foreigner = Form M”. That is not always correct.

2️⃣EA issued does not mean your filing is done
Your employer issues Form EA to report employment income. You are still responsible for filing your personal tax return. EA supports your filing. It does not replace it.

3️⃣Overseas and side income still need review
Income that is paid overseas, freelance, or occasional is often assumed to be out of scope.

Whether it needs to be declared depends on source, nature, and residency status.

📣Starting early gives you time to:
🔸confirm your tax residency
🔸file the correct form
🔸review what income should be declared
