On Wednesday 8 July, a swan was rescued from Geusseltvijver after it was found in distress. Botulism is suspected to be the cause.

Botulism is a disease that mainly affects fish and waterbirds. It is caused by toxins produced by bacteria and can make both animals and humans ill.

As a precation, please do not let your dog drink from Geusseltvijver or swim in the pond.

Gemeente Maastricht has put up warning signs around the pond and has asked Waterschap (water authority) to investigate whether botulism is present.

The municipality has issued a warning to dog owners, advising them not to let their pets drink from or swim in Geusselt Lake until further notice. Students from student societies KoKo and MSRV Saurus in collaboration with are helping give unwanted bicycles a second life. Their collection campaign not only reduces bicycle clutter in Maastricht, but also helps make cycling more accessible for others. 💚
