KIWISAVER CHANGES 1 APRIL 2026

The NZ Government’s increasing the default contribution KiwiSaver rates for employees and employers to 3.5% (from 3%).

You can apply at IRD for a temporary rate reduction for a 3 month to 12 month period. This could be because you can’t afford the rate increase or want to save in other ways.

Next increase is to 4% on 1st April 2028.

Inland Revenue will focus on collecting debt and improving compliance in the tax debt and tax system.

IR has recently confirmed that the 2024–2025 financial year will target the following:

• the hidden economy and organised crime;
• electronic sales suppression tools;
• GST integrity;
• student loan overseas-based borrowers; and,
• increased audit activity.

IR are also changing the way they collect overdue debt. Aside from the normal warning letters and monthly statements, IR will be using direct contact campaigns, including telephone calls and SMS messaging. This will not affect those with debt less than 6 months old or have debt under current negotiations or under installment plans.

If you have a trust, it is advisable next time you log into your internet banking you go to your settings and check the bank has set the trust tax rate at 39 cents for the RWT tax rate.

Some banks changed the default rate automatically but best to check.

If you find the rate is set at 45% you will need to enter the IRD number.

Tax relief to tackle ‘prolonged cost-of-living crisis’

Tax relief in the Budget 2024 will let New Zealanders keep more of what they earn.

Households will benefit by $60-$78 per fortnight on average.

The tax changes apply from 31 July 2024, apart from FamilyBoost which applies from 1 July 2024.

Increasing personal income tax thresholds reduces income tax for people earning more than $14,000 per annum.

Extending the income limit for the independent earner tax credit to $70,000 per annum means if you earn between 24k-70k (not receiving Working for Families, main benefits or Superannuation) you are eligible for up to $20 per fortnight.

Increasing the in-work tax credit means an estimated 160,000 low-to-middle-income working families will get up to $50 extra per fortnight.

The new FamilyBoost payment will help eligible families with the costs of early childhood education, by up to $150 per fortnight.
