💡 BUDGET 2026: What Does It Mean for Small Business Owners?

After last week's Government Budget announcement, many business owners have been asking: "Is there anything in it for me?"

The short answer:
There are no major new tax cuts for small businesses, but there are still opportunities worth taking advantage of.

✅ Investment Boost remains available – meaning businesses can claim an immediate 20% tax deduction on eligible new assets, on top of normal depreciation.
✅ The Government is continuing its focus on economic growth, infrastructure investment, and getting the country's finances back on track.
✅ Several tax compliance changes are being introduced to simplify some areas of the tax system.

My biggest takeaway for business owners?
👉 Don't wait for the Government to improve your business.

The businesses that thrive over the next 12 months will be the ones that:
• Know their numbers
• Manage cash flow carefully
• Price correctly
• Keep GST and tax obligations up to date
• Invest wisely in equipment and technology that improves productivity

👉 These are regular conversations I have with clients — but the businesses that do well are the ones that actually take action.

If things are starting to feel a bit overwhelming with your numbers or cash flow, you’re not alone.

Let’s have a chat and get you back on track so running your business feels a lot simpler again.

One of the biggest frustrations business owners have with provisional tax is paying tax based on last year… when this year looks completely different.

Maybe income is down.
Maybe cashflow is tighter.
Maybe business has become seasonal or unpredictable.

That’s where AIM (Accounting Income Method) can be a game changer.

Instead of guessing your provisional tax or paying based on old numbers, AIM calculates tax payments using your actual profit throughout the year.

That means:
✔️ Payments are based on real-time results
✔️ Less risk of overpaying tax
✔️ Better cashflow management
✔️ Fewer nasty surprises

For many small businesses, AIM takes a lot of the stress and uncertainty out of provisional tax.

It’s not right for everyone — but for the right business, it can make a huge difference.

If you’ve ever felt like your provisional tax payments don’t reflect reality, it might be worth having a conversation about whether AIM could work for you.

One of the biggest surprises for new business owners isn’t making sales…It’s the second year of tax.

In the first year, things usually feel manageable.
You’re focused on growing the business, bringing in clients, and keeping things moving.

Then the second year rolls around and the tax bills stack up fast:
• Last year’s terminal tax
• This year’s provisional tax
• Sometimes ACC on top as well

That’s when many business owners start wondering:
“How can I be this busy and still feel behind financially?”

The reality is, this catches a lot of people out — especially when nobody explained what was coming early on.

The businesses that handle it best usually aren’t the ones earning the most.
They’re the ones who planned ahead, kept money aside regularly, and had good advice from the beginning.

Tax itself usually isn’t the problem...Unexpected tax bills are.

If you’re in your first couple of years in business and want to avoid getting caught out by tax surprises, feel free to reach out. A little planning early on can make a huge difference.

Calling someone a “contractor” doesn’t make it one — and IRD knows the difference.

For small business owners, it can feel easier to just pay someone on invoice. No payroll, no KiwiSaver, no worrying about leave.

Simple, right? Not always.

IRD looks at how the work actually happens — not just what you call it.

If your worker:
• Shows up regularly
• Works set hours
• Uses your tools or gear
• Takes direction from you

…there’s a good chance they could be seen as an employee.

If that happens, you could be on the hook for:
• PAYE you should’ve deducted
• KiwiSaver contributions
• Holiday pay and leave entitlements
• Penalties and interest

Yeah — the rules (especially around the Holidays Act) can be a headache. But cutting corners here can cost a lot more later.

If someone’s working in your business like part of the crew, it’s worth checking you’ve got it set up right.

Better to sort it now — than have IRD sort it for you.
