We recently enjoyed a Team Lunch at Union Post, to celebrate meeting our productivity target last month and tax filing target this month. Most of us chose the burgers and market fish. We loved the flavours, the crisp fries and the friendly Union Post staff.

Are your payroll and leave systems ready for the Employment Leave Act 2026?

The Holidays Act 2003 has caused headaches for many New Zealand employers, especially where staff have variable hours, casual arrangements, parental leave, or changing work patterns.

The new Employment Leave Act 2026 is intended to make leave entitlements clearer. Employers need to be prepared before the new rules take effect from 6 August 2028.

In JDW's latest blog, we cover:

- what is changing from the current Holidays Act rules
- how annual leave, sick leave and public holidays will be treated
- what employers should start reviewing now
- why payroll systems, employment agreements and workplace policies all need attention

You can read the blog here: https://www.jdw.co.nz/how-do-i-get-ready-for-the-employment-leave-act-2026
If you are unsure whether your payroll records, leave calculations, or employment agreements are ready for the changes, please contact the team at JDW. We can help you work through the payroll and leave entitlement issues in plain English, alongside your HR and employment law advisers where needed.

Imagine if supplier bills landed in your accounting system automatically, with fewer errors and less manual data entry. What if your customers could process your invoices faster too? eInvoicing can help small businesses save time, reduce administration, and improve cashflow by sending invoice data directly between accounting systems.

Are you setting up in business, and unsure what structure to choose? We compare and contrast, not three, but four different options for business owners in our blog " Sole trader, Partnership or Company?"

The option you choose affects how much tax you pay, how much paperwork you'll have, and how much personal risk you take if things go wrong. Contact JDW Chartered Accountants to discuss your plans and choose a structure that's right for you.

A milestone birthday for JDW's managing director, Rohit!

We celebrated Rohit's 50th birthday on Saturday, with his family and friends. A flavourful lunch at Tarka, quiz, toasts, singing and dancing. Congratulations and best wishes for the next half-century.

Today I received a beautiful purple, pink and white bouquet from a grateful client — a thoughtful reminder of why we do what we do.

When I wrote to thank him, he replied: “My pleasure. Thank you again for your kind support and guidance over the years. All the best.”

It meant a great deal, because this client’s journey has been a long one. When they first came to us in 2019, their records were disorganised, GST and income tax filings were behind, and their tax debt felt overwhelming.

Together, we helped them put practical systems in place: connecting them with bookkeeping support, setting them up in Xero, training them to manage their own coding and GST, and working through tax pooling finance and Inland Revenue arrangements to gradually reduce the pressure.

More recently, after the sale of their family home, we supported them through a settlement of the remaining tax debt, including a penalty write-off. It was a significant milestone — not just financially, but personally.

As our work together comes to a close, we wish them all the very best for the next chapter ahead.

Moments like this are a reminder that accounting is not only about numbers, returns, and compliance. At its best, it is about walking alongside people through difficult seasons, helping them find clarity, and supporting them toward a better position.

Feeling very grateful today — for the flowers, the kind words, and the privilege of being trusted to help.

Are your provisional tax payments higher than they should be?

The standard provisional tax uplift method assumes your 2027 income tax will be 5% higher than 2026 — but that may not reflect what is actually happening in your business.

That’s where AIM provisional tax can help.

With AIM, your provisional tax payments are based on your actual profit during the year, rather than an estimate. Payments are made monthly or two-monthly, and if your business makes a loss, you may be able to receive a refund.

AIM can be especially useful for:
Businesses with fluctuating income
Growth businesses wanting to avoid the “second-year tax trap”
Businesses looking for provisional tax payments that better match cash flow

We’ve outlined how AIM works in our blog:

- Attributable FIF Income Method (AFI ) retention below 10% holding

A side hustle can be a great way to earn extra income or test a business idea, but do you have to pay tax on it?

The key issues are whether you have a hobby or a business, what income needs to be declared, whether GST applies and how to stay on top of your record-keeping and tax payments.

If you’ve started earning income on the side and you’re not sure what your obligations are, this is worth a read.
