Two farms can bring in similar revenue and finish the season in very different positions.

One may have more room to manage an unexpected repair, a delayed payment or a change in conditions. The other may have very little breathing space.

When did you last give interest costs their own review?

Pita’s latest newsletter gives borrowing costs particular attention. For a farm or business, that raises a useful planning question: how much cash is committed before other priorities are considered?

Start with three questions:
What are we paying in interest, and what are our total loan repayments?
What cash remains for operating costs, maintenance and planned investment?
How would that position change if borrowing costs increased or income arrived later than expected?

Separating interest from principal repayments helps you understand the financing cost while keeping the full cash commitment in view.

A debt balance can attract plenty of attention.
On its own, it tells you surprisingly little.

In his latest newsletter, Pita Alexander considers the importance of looking at debt alongside the wider financial picture. For a farm or owner-managed business, that prompts a practical question: what income and available cash support the repayments?

Borrowing to fund productive capacity raises different questions from borrowing to cover an ongoing operating gap. The amount matters, but so do its purpose, repayment commitments and the reliability of the income behind it.

Before deciding whether a balance feels manageable, ask: what funded it, what will repay it, and how much room remains if income changes?

Here’s one number from Pita Alexander’s latest newsletter that’s worth thinking about.

In 2026, around 32,490 New Zealanders will turn 65.
That’s approximately 89 people every day.

For business and farm owners, there’s a bigger conversation sitting behind that number.

What happens next?

Retirement doesn’t necessarily mean stepping away tomorrow. But it does make questions around succession, ownership, management, family involvement and future income increasingly important.

The strongest succession plans generally aren’t made when somebody has decided they’re ready to leave. They’re developed while there is still time to consider the options.

Sometimes a couple of numbers tell quite a story.

Pita Alexander’s latest collection of New Zealand statistics notes that:
🐑 New Zealand has around 22.78 million sheep in 2026.
🐑 In 1982, that figure was around 70 million.

That’s a remarkable change in 44 years.

But agriculture remains enormously important to New Zealand. Pita also notes that food and fibre exports for the year ended 30 June 2026 totalled $64.325 billion, including $28.6 billion from dairy, $14.1 billion from meat and wool and $9.5 billion from horticulture.

The numbers change. Farming systems change. Markets change.

And that’s precisely why good farm management requires more than looking at what worked ten or twenty years ago.

Understanding where your own operation sits today - its performance, profitability, debt, capital requirements and future direction - gives you a much stronger foundation for the decisions ahead.
