Christchurch Hospital's colonoscopy waiting list has now passed 10,000 people, highlighting the increasing pressure on our public health system (https://www.chrislynchmedia.com/news-items/christchurch-hospital-colonoscopy-waitlist-passes-10000-as-patients-face-months-of-delays/)

At the same time, Southern Cross paid $21.3 million for 7,524 colonoscopies in just three months (April–June 2026), making it their second most claimed procedure (Southern Cross claims data)

This matters because New Zealand has one of the highest rates of bowel cancer in the world. More than 3,000 Kiwis are diagnosed every year, over 1,200 lose their lives, and 1 in 18 New Zealanders will develop bowel cancer during their lifetime (https://bowelcancernz.org.nz/).

While no one plans on needing a colonoscopy, having the right private health cover can mean faster access when time matters most.

A little planning today could save months of waiting tomorrow for you or someone you love.

I have what is probably the world’s strangest job.

I spend my days creating solutions that I sincerely hope my clients never have to use.

Imagine buying something and your advisor says, "I hope you never get your money’s worth!". Yet that’s exactly what personal risk insurance is.

The value isn’t in making a claim. It’s knowing the solution is already there if life throws you an unexpected curveball because once that moment arrives, you can’t rewind the clock and decide to put cover in place.

So, while I hope every one of my clients pays their premiums for years and never needs to call me about a claim, I sleep well knowing that if life has other plans, they’ve already got a solution waiting for them.

One of the things I enjoy most about my role is that sometimes the biggest wins come from simply asking the right questions.

Recently, I was reviewing a client's insurance programme when I spotted that something wasn't quite right with their employer-provided insurance scheme.

On the surface, everything appeared to be in order, but after digging a little deeper, it became clear there was an issue that needed to be addressed.

The client raised it with their employer, who acknowledged the oversight and escalated it to their head office to have it resolved. The outcome? It wasn't just a win for my client; it has the potential to improve the insurance arrangements for their entire team.

This is exactly why independent advice matters.

It's easy to assume that employer-provided insurance has everything covered, but that's not always the case. Having someone who can independently review your cover, ask the right questions, and identify issues before they become problems can make a significant difference.

For me, it's not just about recommending insurance policies. It's about advocating for my clients, helping them understand what they have, identifying where things don't quite add up, and ensuring they're in the best possible position.

Sometimes, one conversation can make a difference far beyond the person sitting across the table.

When it comes to personal risk and insurance, it's never just about policies and paperwork.

The best advice starts with understanding people. Their goals, their families, their health considerations, and what they're working towards. That's why strong relationships matter.

By getting to know clients on a deeper level, we can help ensure their protection strategy evolves alongside their life.

Insurance shouldn't be treated as a transaction. It should be part of a long-term partnership focused on helping you protect what matters most.

Nothing says "Happy Monday" quite like discovering a rodent has decided your house pipe looked like a great midnight snack.

This resulted in an unexpected water leak, a wet floor, and a very different start to the week than you had planned.

It's a reminder that life has a funny way of throwing surprises at us when we least expect them.

While most of us don't spend our weekends worrying about rodents with plumbing ambitions, unexpected events happen every day. Some are minor inconveniences, and some can have a much bigger impact on our finances, our health, and our families.

That's why personal risk insurance exists. You can't always prevent the unexpected, but you can prepare for it.

Just like having the right cover can help when something goes wrong with your home, having the right personal insurance can help protect your income, lifestyle, and loved ones if life takes an unexpected turn.

Because while we can't predict every challenge that might come our way, being prepared makes dealing with them a whole lot easier.

And if anyone knows of a rodent looking for a career change, I may have a plumbing apprenticeship available 😉

How satisfied are you with your KiwiSaver provider?

Recently, Consumer NZ conducted its annual survey to determine consumers' satisfaction with their KiwiSaver provider and to highlight the "People's Choice" (2,000 independent clients).

This year, these were named as Generate KiwiSaver Scheme, Booster NZ, Milford and Simplicity.

While it is great to see an uplift in satisfaction, when was the last time you reviewed your KiwiSaver provider and solution?

Here's a tip - most people never have...

One of the most overlooked parts of financial and estate planning is policy ownership.

It’s not just about having insurance in place. It’s about making sure the money goes where you actually want it to go, when it matters most.

The ownership structure of an insurance policy can impact:

• Who controls the policy
• Who receives the proceeds
• How quickly funds can be accessed
• Whether the payout aligns with your estate wishes

When supported properly with an Enduring Power of Attorney (EPA) and an up-to-date Will, policy ownership becomes a powerful tool to help protect families, reduce stress, and ensure loved ones are financially supported exactly as intended.

A small conversation today can prevent major complications later.

It’s always worth reviewing:

✔️ Who owns your policies
✔️ Who the beneficiaries are
✔️ Whether your legal documents still reflect your wishes

Good planning isn’t just about creating wealth and financial support. It’s about making sure it ends up in the right hands.

30 June is the deadline to qualify for the government KiwiSaver contribution.💰

If you’ve contributed at least $1,042.86 to your KiwiSaver this year, the government adds up to $260.72 for free if you are over 18.

$260 might not feel like much today, but invested over decades, compounding interest can turn small amounts into something far more meaningful.

A quick top-up before 30 June could make a bigger difference to your future self than you think.

Worth checking your balance before the deadline 👀

Want a quick tip?

When applying for personal insurance, one thing that often catches people off guard is their ACC claim history.

And before you panic… no, that ankle sprain from trying to relive your rugby or ice skating glory days probably isn’t forgotten!

Most people don’t realise you can actually request a summary of your ACC claims history directly from ACC, and it’s usually quick and easy to obtain.

Why does it matter?
Insurers will often ask about previous injuries, claims, or treatment history during the application process. Having the information upfront helps avoid surprises, delays, or accidental omissions later on.

A little preparation now can make the application process much smoother.

Sometimes the best insurance advice is simply knowing what you need to have ready before you start 👍

One of the biggest advantages of working with an independent insurance advisor is simple...... Choice.

Let me paint you a picture. We go down a path with one insurer, everything’s looking great… and then.... a disclosure pops up. Maybe it’s an old injury, a health condition, or something from years ago… and suddenly, we hit a roadblock.

Now, if you’re dealing with just one provider, that’s often where the story ends. Game over.

But this is where financial advisors come in.

Because we don’t have just one option, we have many. Different insurers look at things differently. What’s a “no” for one might be a “yes” for another.

Sometimes you feel like giving up at that point. The process feels too hard, too complicated… a bit like assembling IKEA furniture without the instructions.

But that’s our job — we love the instructions.

We do the groundwork, the back-and-forth, the problem-solving, so you don’t have to.

Our goal is simple: To find a way forward when it feels like there isn’t one.

So if you know someone who’s been told “no,” send them our way because “no” is often just the start of the conversation.
