Spring is here—and you can certainly feel it in the air. There’s a sense of optimism, fresh energy and new beginnings all around us.

How can you harness some of that energy in your business?

Now is a great time to start thinking about your plans for the year ahead. What changes would help your business move forward? Is there a new project you want to undertake, infrastructure or equipment you need to purchase, or is it simply time to put together a proper plan and budget?

We can help you work through your ideas, put some numbers around them and develop a practical plan—so they don’t remain just ideas, but actually come to fruition.

There’s nothing quite like seeing everything come together after harnessing that spring feeling!

A special moment for Kathryn this week

Her daughter Sarah McArley was featured in Farmers Weekly, speaking about the importance of water security for horticulture. Sarah makes a point that really matters: growers need confidence they’ll have water when their crops need it before they can make long term decisions about developing an orchard.

This is close to Kathryn’s heart in more ways than one. As a trustee of Te Tai Tokerau Water Trust, she is involved in the work to improve water security in our region. It’s wonderful to see Sarah speaking up about what that certainty means for growers.

Well done, Sarah. It’s an important conversation, and a very proud mum is sharing it today!

Today Kathryn headed to Auckland to catch up with Amanda Gascoigne her mentor and sounding board and her husband Jason.

Amanda and Kathryn have spoken every month since 2020, but this is only the second time they have met in person.

Accountants sometimes need help too. Having someone you trust to talk through what you are doing, where you are heading and how you plan to get there can be incredibly valuable. Sometimes a fresh perspective—or simply saying things out loud—is exactly what you need.

We understand the importance of having a sounding board. If there is something happening in your business that you would like to talk through, we are always happy to help.

I had a really interesting Friday taking part in the Te Roroa Governance Induction Day.

It made me realise how much I still have to understand—and how important it is that we remain open to learning more about the history of our area, its whenua and its people.

A highlight was visiting Waipoua Forest and Tāne Mahuta, and having the opportunity to listen and absorb the way the kaitiaki of the forest think, act and govern to ensure it remains for generations to come.

There is so much we can take from this approach and carry into other areas of our work and our lives.

It was a very special way to begin my governance journey with Te Roroa, and I look forward to continuing to listen, grow and contribute.

The Shortest Day, the Longest View

Today marks the Winter Solstice – the shortest day of the year.

While daylight hours are at their minimum, it's a great reminder that the second half of the year is still ahead of us.

For business owners, now is the perfect time to ask:

✔️ Are you on track to meet your goals?
✔️ How is your cashflow looking for the months ahead?
✔️ Are there tax obligations that need planning for?
✔️ What opportunities are there to improve profitability before year-end?

The shortest day is a natural point to pause, reflect, and make sure you're heading in the right direction before the days (and opportunities) start getting longer again.

At de Bruin Chartered Accountants, we help businesses look beyond the numbers and plan for what's ahead.

The days get longer from here. Is your business plan ready for the journey?

Can Kathryn Make It to 30km?

Kathryn set herself a goal of swimming 20km during June to raise funds for Coastguard New Zealand.

With 11 days still to go, she's already completed 18.78km – that's almost 1 kilometre every day!

So now we're wondering...

Can she make it to 30km by the end of the month?

If you're a boat owner, fisher, diver, water sports enthusiast, or simply enjoy getting out on the water, we'd love your support for a cause we sincerely hope you never have to use.

If things don't go to plan on the water, you'll be glad Coastguard is there.

Every donation helps support the volunteers, vessels, equipment, and training needed to keep people safe on the water.
