Paying staff a Christmas bonus this year? How about choosing gift cards and vouchers instead? Cash bonuses come with PAYE obligations, whereas the alternative can come under FBT rules and ay not require a tax payment. Something to think about!

It’s not too soon to start budgeting for your staff Christmas function but, just remember, that only 50% of it is tax deductible! Make sure that you’re being realistic with your spending and find fun alternatives to expensive dinners like scavenger hunts, themes like the “Amazing Race” or even Bingo or Quiz nights with a BBQ or platters.

Hire new personnel with confidence using the 90 day trial process. Recruiting new staff is expensive with the cost of advertising plus time spent on interviewing and reference checking. It’s even more expensive when it’s the wrong person so the 90 days gives you the space you need to ensure you’ve got the right team member. Make sure you’re clear on what’s expected, check in often, and address concerns within a reasonable time frame.

Some proposed changes are coming next year for non-profit organisations including the ability to earn up to $10k without having to pay tax. Unless requested by IRD, filing a tax return won’t be required which is great news for community groups and their secretaries/treasurers. More info to come!

From 1st April 2027 Fringe benefit Tax (FBT) will be getting simpler. Rules around company branded-vehicles, personal use, and what a work vehicle is will be changing. We’ll keep you posted once all the details are available but you’ll be saying goodbye to those pesky log books!

There are some proposed changes coming up to the Holidays Act of 2003 including how annual & sick leave is accrued as well as making pay slips mandatory.
