Huge congratulations to James Blackburne, who has been appointed the 66th President of Te Kāhui Whaihanga NZ Institute of Architects.

What an outstanding achievement.

James is a director of Architects 44 and has made a significant contribution to architecture, heritage conservation and professional leadership over many years.

To see a Tairāwhiti leader stepping into a national role like this is something worth celebrating.

Announcing James Blackburne as 66th President of Te Kāhui Whaihanga NZ Institute of Architects.

Hailing from Tairāwhiti Gisborne and a director of Architects 44, James is widely respected for his contributions to architecture, heritage conservation and professional leadership.

He succeeds Huia Reriti, who has served as the Institute’s Perehitini (President) since 2024. A longstanding Institute member and appointed a Fellow in 2005, James has contributed to a range of governance and advocacy initiatives. Alongside his architectural practice, he has played a significant role in heritage protection through his involvement with Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga, reflecting a longstanding commitment to preserving and celebrating New Zealand’s built heritage.

“Architecture has a vital role to play in shaping thriving, resilient communities. I look forward to working alongside our members, branches and partners to champion the value of good design, support a strong profession and help address the challenges facing our built environment and society,” James says.

He was formally inaugurated on June 25 in a ceremony held at the Waikanae Surf Life Saving Club in Gisborne with family and friends.
