There is a sentence a lot of us say without noticing.

I want to sort this, BUT. I know it needs doing, BUT.

The BUT always sounds like a reason. Time, money, the year being what it is. Sometimes those reasons are real. Often the BUT is just the place you stop, because moving forward would mean being seen before you feel ready.

Here is something worth trying. Listen for where your BUT sits. That thing you keep almost doing. Then say the same sentence with AND instead.

I want to sort this, AND.

AND asks what comes next.
BUT closes it down.

The distance between those two words is where a lot of change lives.

The image you present to the world does not always represent your true self.

You choose what people see. The capable one. The one who has it handled. Underneath, there are parts you keep quieter.

A lot of us carry that. Business owners especially. You hold it together for your whānau, your clients, your community, and the version they meet is the one who is coping.

Your true self is not for everyone. Who you let close enough to see it, matters. Not everyone has earned that.

Knowing yourself starts with being honest about that distance. Seeing it clearly, for yourself first. Then choosing, with care, who you trust with the rest.

That is where September is going. Somewhere honest.

August has been a month of real things.

Pressure and what it reveals. Standing firm when the tide goes out. The courage of the first conversation. The people you trust in the room. Being seen. Preparing clear ground for those who come after.

Through all of it, one thing holds.

Whakapono. Faith in the kaupapa. Belief in what you are building and why. The quiet certainty that the work matters even when the conditions make it hard.

That is not something you find in a difficult moment. It is something you build before one.

Moments!

I have many hats. This weekend I was in charge of a four year old's special request birthday cake.

The cake was cooling on the rack and I went to flip it. I knew it was still too hot. I thought about waiting, and I did it anyway.

It broke.

That is a small moment. Nobody was hurt. A cake got fixed with a bit of icing and nobody was the wiser.

But it is the same moment that shows up in bigger decisions too. The place where some part of you already knows, and you choose to act before that knowing catches up with you.

Pay attention to your own moments like this one. They tend to be trying to tell you something.

It builds in the moment a figure that felt overwhelming becomes a question you know how to answer. When the financial picture stops being something that happens to you and starts being something you understand and can act on.

That is what we are working toward in every conversation. Not just accurate numbers. Understanding. Because understanding is what creates choice. And choice is what mana motuhake is made of.
