Your Profit and Loss shows what the business earned. It doesn't show what it took from you to earn it.

Some trade-offs are worth making. A busy season, a big contract, a push to get something off the ground. The ones that hurt are the trade-offs you never chose.

At halfway, look at both sides of the picture. If the total cost to you has been too high, now is when you change it.

Some businesses look healthy from the road. Busy every day, phone ringing, sales climbing. Then the year-end numbers come in and there is less left than anyone expected.

Sales are the leaves. Profit is the fruit - what is left once the costs, the wages and the tax are paid.

A tree that puts all its energy into leaves has less left for fruit. A business can go the same way. Chasing more sales can mean more discounting, more small jobs, more hours and more costs. Everything grows except what you keep.

Growers prune for a reason. At halfway, look at where your time and money went. Cutting back some of the busy work can leave more for the fruit.

At halfway, it is easy to focus on what is missing. The target not reached or the plan that slipped.

Look back further than April. Something you have now was once a hope. A client you wanted or a debt to be cleared. That GST return that used to keep you up at night and now gets done on time.

Tutuki. Those moments along the way when something you once hoped for has become reality.

Noticing it matters. Without it, the goalposts keep moving. Every target you reach becomes the floor for the next one, and enough never arrives.

Knowing what enough looks like for you and your whānau keeps money working for the life you want.

Halfway is a good time to look, because there is still time to change the second half. In Xero, set the Profit and Loss date range and use "Compare with" to see last year beside this year. Fifteen minutes is enough to read the story.

Kōanga is when the māra gets planted. Before anything goes in the ground, you look at the soil. What grew last season. What didn't. What the ground needs now.

Your business works the same way. We are six months into the financial year. 1 April to 30 September is done, and those numbers are the soil your next six months grow in.

Halfway is a reality check. When your numbers are clear, you can see your reality and plan the second half from what is true.

Kia mārama. Be clear first.

Once you know who you are, you can start to see where you are going.

Te Moemoeā. The vision. Not a goal on a list. The reason underneath the choices. The future you are working toward for yourself and the generations after you.

Here is the practical part. A vision that lives only in your head stays a wish. It stays vague enough to keep putting off. Write it down. Say it out loud. Put it somewhere you will see it, on the wall, on the fridge, in the front of the diary.

Not because the words are magic. Because a vision you can see is one you can measure your choices against. Does this take me toward it, or away. That question is only possible once the vision is real enough to point at.

You can choose, with purpose, what you do next. Start by making the vision something you can look at.

Look back over the month:
- The gap between who you show and who you are.
- The BUT that keeps you still.
- The voice that is not yours.
- The two things you cannot both hold.
- The bluff you have been avoiding.

Every one of them comes back to the same question. Ko wai au? Who am I?

When you know who you are, the rest gets clearer:
- You know which BUT to release, because you know what you actually want.
- You know whose voice to stop listening to, because you know which one is yours.
- You know which of the two things matters more, because you know where you are heading.

Knowing yourself is the ground everything else stands on. It is where Te Ara Pūtea begins, before the numbers, before the plan.

Ko wai au. Everything starts there.

We started the month with a small word that keeps you stuck. BUT.

BUT looks backward. It points at the reason you cannot. AND looks forward. It points at what happens next.

I want to grow the business, but the timing is hard. Stop there and nothing moves.

I want to grow the business, and the timing is hard, so here is the first thing I will do.

Same truth. The timing is still hard. Nothing about your situation changed. What changed is the direction you are facing.

The BUT is not a lie. The obstacles are real. The AND is what opens the way forward. It makes room for the next step instead of ending on the BUT.

That is most of what this month has been about. Seeing clearly, and then turning to face the way you actually want to go.

Being stuck is not about fear or lack of motivation. It is about trying to hold two things pulling in opposite directions.

You want to grow and you want nothing to change. You want the freedom of your own business and the safety of a guaranteed wage. You want more time with the whānau and you want to take on the bigger contract.

Both are real. Both matter. That is exactly why it is hard, there is no easy one to drop.

You cannot move toward one while still gripping the other. At some point moving forward means naming the thing you are willing to loosen your grip on. Not because it did not matter. Because the other matters more, right now, for where you are heading.

That choice is yours to make. Knowing which is which is most of the work.

You can read every book on money. You can ask every adviser you know, sit through every workshop, save every helpful post.

And still be exactly where you started.

Understanding is where it begins. Seeing your position clearly, knowing what needs to happen. That matters, it is real work. Yet knowing and doing are separated by a step that only you can take.

This is the honest end of the month’s thread so far. You can see the gap, hear the BUT, name the voice, call your own bluff. All of it counts. The change itself still waits on one small action you choose to take.

Not a grand plan. One step. The email sent. The meeting booked. The number finally looked at.
