If you’ve been battling Xero issues over the last few days… you’re definitely not alone.

With ongoing outages and disruptions affecting customers across New Zealand, it’s been a frustrating week for a lot of business owners, bookkeepers, accountants, and payroll teams.

When systems we rely on suddenly stop cooperating, even simple tasks can become stressful very quickly.

A gentle reminder:
✔ save work regularly
✔ allow extra time for payroll and reconciliations
✔ don’t leave deadlines until the last minute where possible
✔ and be kind to yourself when tech has other plans 😅

Sometimes bookkeeping isn’t difficult because you’re doing something wrong.

Sometimes the software is just having a moment.

Hopefully things stabilise properly soon for everyone affected 🤞

Your bookkeeping should do more than “keep the IRD happy.”

It should help you:
✔ understand your cashflow
✔ make better decisions
✔ avoid expensive mistakes
✔ sleep better at night

Tax changes like these are a good reminder that financial systems matter.

Good bookkeeping isn’t just admin.

It’s business protection.

And business growth.

If your books feel messy, delayed, or stressful…

…it might be time for better support.

We can help 👋

📚 Friendly reminder:

You do NOT need to “just wing it” when it comes to tax.

IRD is offering free tax seminars for business owners, and honestly - they’re worth attending.

Understanding your obligations early saves a lot of stress later.

And if tax seminars still make your eyes glaze over…

That’s also why we exist 😅

Our job is helping business owners stay compliant, organised, and confident with their finances — without the overwhelm.

Because running your business is enough work already.

🔨 Thinking about buying new equipment for your business?

Don’t forget about Investment Boost.

This tax incentive allows businesses to claim a 20% deduction on eligible new business assets when filing income tax returns.

That could include things like:
✔ machinery
✔ technology
✔ equipment
✔ work vehicles
✔ commercial buildings

Basically: smart upgrades may come with smart tax benefits.

The key is making sure it’s structured and claimed properly.

Before you make the purchase - check the numbers first.

That’s where good bookkeeping matters most.

💵 Gift cards.
🚗 Work vehicles
🧳 Employee perks

These all sit inside the world of Fringe Benefit Tax (FBT)…

…and yes, it can get messy fast.

New FBT rules are now in effect, and in some cases, businesses now have more flexibility in how benefits are treated.

Some benefits may be handled through:
→ FBT
OR
→ Employment income with PAYE deducted

Which option is right depends on your setup.

This is exactly why “quick guesses” in bookkeeping can become expensive.

Reviewing this now could save you money later.

If you’re unsure, that’s your sign to ask 👀

💸 “I can’t afford the KiwiSaver increase right now…”

Some employees may be feeling exactly that.

Good news: They can apply for a temporary KiwiSaver rate reduction for 3 to 12 months if needed.

If your employee gives you that letter, you’ll need to process it correctly through payroll.

This is where small admin mistakes can turn into bigger compliance issues.

Payroll isn’t just pressing “pay now.”

It’s knowing what needs attention before it becomes a problem.

That’s our job 👋

📈 KiwiSaver changes are here.

From 1 April, the default contribution rate for both employers and employees has increased to 3.5% (up from 3%).

If your payroll settings haven’t been updated yet - now’s the time.

Also important 👇

16 and 17-year-old employees now qualify for employer KiwiSaver contributions too.

That means if you’ve got younger staff on the team, you may need to adjust payroll and employer contributions.

Miss this, and it can create headaches later.

Payroll compliance is one of those things that feels small… until it isn’t.

We help make sure it’s done right the first time ✔️

Today we pause to remember.

ANZAC Day is a time to honour the courage, sacrifice, and service of those who gave so much for future generations.

It’s more than a public holiday. It’s a reminder of resilience, community, and the freedoms we often take for granted.

Lest we forget.

🚨 Important Security Alert for Kiwis: Inland Revenue warns of hackers accessing 300 myIR accounts

Inland Revenue has reported a sharp rise in malicious login attempts, with over 500,000 suspicious logons detected last month. Cyber criminals successfully accessed around 300 myIR accounts over just two weeks — but thankfully, no financial losses occurred.

The key issue? Many of these accounts didn't have two-step verification (2SV) enabled, and users had reused the same username and password from other, less secure websites. Once those credentials get leaked elsewhere, hackers try them on government and banking sites like myIR.

At Bing B**g Bookkeeping, we help businesses and individuals stay on top of their tax and financial admin — but protecting your personal information is just as important.

Here are 3 simple but powerful steps to keep your online accounts (especially myIR, banking, and government apps) much safer:
Use unique usernames and passwords for every account

1. Never reuse the same login details across different sites. What seems convenient can open the door to hackers if one site gets breached.

2. Get a password manager app
Tools like Bitwarden, 1Password, or LastPass generate and securely store strong, unique passwords for all your accounts. You only need to remember one master password.

3. Enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) everywhere — and use an authenticator app
Turn on 2SV / MFA for your myIR account (and banking, email, etc.).
Better still: Use a dedicated authenticator app like Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, or Authy to keep all your MFA codes in one secure place (instead of relying on SMS, which can be intercepted).

These small habits make a massive difference and can stop most common attacks in their tracks.

If your myIR account was one of the affected ones, Inland Revenue will be in touch. In the meantime, log in today, enable 2SV if you haven’t already, and review your recent activity.

Got questions about your tax records, GST, or business bookkeeping while you’re sorting your online security? Drop us a message — we’re here to help make it all less stressful 🔒
