The idea still rings so true: running a business is a lot easier when you’ve got the right people in your corner.

Your accountant shouldn’t exist in a completely different universe to your lawyer, insurance advisor, mortgage broker, banker, IT people or anyone else helping you make decisions about the business.

And in 2026, we'd absolutely add tech to that circle. IT support, cyber security, AI, systems and automation are becoming a much bigger part of how all businesses operate - not just the big guys (hence the new addition to the 2021 graphic 👆).

This is how we like to work at Resonate Advisory. Yep, we look after the numbers, tax and accounting side, but businesses don’t operate in neat little boxes. Sometimes the best thing we can do is recognise when you need someone with a completely different area of expertise and point you in the right direction.

We’ve built up a network of great people across these areas who we’re happy to refer clients to when they need them. And equally, we’re very happy to work alongside the advisors you already know and trust.

Great advice works a whole lot better when everyone knows what everyone else is doing.

I’m Shelley - owner of Resonate Advisory, Chartered Accountant, business advisor, small business enthusiast and the person responsible for a "new ideas carpark" board on Planner.

Here’s a little bit about me, what I do, and why I started Resonate Advisory in the first place.

Ever had your accountant tell you the business made a decent profit, while your bank account looked like it had missed the memo?

Annoying. But totally possible.

Profit shows what the business earned after its expenses. It’s a measure of performance. Your bank balance, on the other hand, is also affected by when customers actually pay, GST and income tax, loan repayments, asset purchases and money you’ve taken out of the business.

That’s why a business can be profitable on paper, yet still feel tight on cash.

You don’t need to choose which number matters more. It’s about understanding what both are telling you, so you can plan ahead without relying on vibes and a suspiciously optimistic bank refresh.
