A successful business should give you more than a full calendar.
It should help create the life you want to live.

For some business owners, that's more time with family. For others, it's financial security, the freedom to travel or simply being able to take a long weekend without worrying about what's happening back at work.

Of course, building a business takes hard work. And there will always be busy periods.
But it's worth remembering what you're working towards.

Better systems, stronger teams, clear financial information and a good plan can all help create more choices over time.

Our philosophy is simple: better businesses create better lives.

Whatever your plans are this Labour Weekend, we hope you get a chance to enjoy some of the things you're working so hard for.

Have a great long weekend!

There's something exciting about buying new gear for your business, and sometimes, it's exactly the right investment at just the right time.

But before getting carried away with the shiny new purchase, it's worth asking one simple question:

What will this actually do for the business?
Will it save time?
Increase capacity?
Reduce costs?
Help you deliver a better service?
Or is it just something you'd really, really like to have? 😉

There's nothing wrong with investing in your business. The trick is making sure the investment stacks up.

What's been the best purchase you've made for your business?

We're keen to hear what equipment or technology has genuinely made a difference.

The team is flat out. The inbox is overflowing. Surely it’s time to hire?

Maybe. But first, follow one job from enquiry to invoice. Where does it wait? Who needs to approve it? How often is work doubled up?

If the bottleneck is a clunky process, another person could simply join the queue. Better scheduling, clearer responsibilities or training might unlock capacity without adding a permanent cost.

Hiring is a great solution when you know which problem the role is solving.

A growing workload can make hiring feel inevitable. But before adding another salary, it pays to understand the real cost, the work a new person will unlock and the impact on your business.

A question for all the business owners out there...

If you switched your phone off and disappeared on holiday for two weeks, what would happen back at work?
A. Everything would run like clockwork.
B. A few things might go sideways, but we'd survive.
C. Absolute chaos. Send help, and coffee.

It's a question worth asking, because how much your business depends on you can tell you quite a lot about where your systems, processes and team might need a little attention.

And let's face it, being able to enjoy a holiday without checking your emails every five minutes would be pretty nice...

Which one are you - A, B or C?

If your business gets busier over summer, October is when some of your most important decisions need to happen.

For hospitality, tourism, retail and other seasonal businesses around Nelson Tasman, the lead-up to summer isn't just about getting ready for more customers.

It's about making sure the extra activity delivers the results you're working towards.

A few things worth reviewing now:

• Staffing levels and wage budgets.
• Stock requirements and supplier arrangements.
• Pricing and profit margins.
• Equipment and maintenance needs.
• How much working capital you'll need during your busiest weeks.

A great summer can create opportunities, but being busy also brings additional costs and demands.

The earlier you plan, the more options you have.

If you'd like help getting your business ready for the season ahead, let's talk.

Sometimes the best business advice comes from the most unexpected places.

A former boss. A mentor. Another business owner. Or someone who simply asks the right question at the right time, over a coffee.

It might be something you've carried with you for years, or a small piece of advice that completely changed how you approach things.

And sometimes it's the advice you didn't particularly want to hear that turns out to be the most valuable!

We'd love to know...

What's the best piece of business advice you've ever received?

Share it below. You never know who might need to hear it today.

Three months left in 2026.
What would make you finish the year feeling good about your business?

More sales?
Better margins?
A stronger team?
Or perhaps a little more time to enjoy life outside work?

October is a great opportunity to look beyond the day-to-day and decide what really matters between now and Christmas.

Start with three questions:
1. What's working well that we should do more of?
2. What's costing us time or money without delivering enough value?
3. What's one important decision we've been putting off?

You don't need a 40-page business plan. You need clear priorities, a few meaningful numbers and a plan to turn them into action.

What would you most like to achieve before the year is out?

Great accounting advice should make running your business easier, not more complicated.

A big thank you to the team at Sublime Airport for sharing their experience working with Michael, Jo and the GoAccounting team 😊🙏

For us, it's about more than getting the numbers right. It's about being approachable, responding when our clients need us and taking the time to explain things clearly, so business owners feel informed and confident about their decisions.

We know that running a business comes with enough challenges. Understanding your finances shouldn't be another one.

Go Further. Go Faster. Go Smarter.

Automation can make a good process faster.

It can also make a poor process fail faster.

Before introducing AI, map the existing workflow:
What triggers it?
Who owns each step?
Where does work get delayed?
What information is repeatedly re-entered?
Which exceptions require human judgement?
What does “finished” actually mean?

You may discover that the best first improvement is a checklist, clearer responsibility or better form - not another piece of software.

That still counts as progress. The goal is better work, not maximum technology.

Read our blog for a practical approach to choosing your first automation project -

AI can create valuable capacity, but only when it is applied to the right process. This practical guide helps Nelson businesses identify worthwhile automation opportunities, manage risk and connect technology improvements with measurable commercial results.
