What a wonderful evening aboard the Lakeland Queen for the Rotorua Business Chamber’s Business After 5! 🛳️

I really enjoyed hearing the story behind bringing this iconic Rotorua attraction back to life. It was inspiring to learn about the work and commitment that has gone into restoring the Lakeland Queen and getting her back out on Lake Rotorua.

A special thank you to Damon and Arna Hagaman, the new owners, and former owner Terry Hammond for sharing the journey and their passion for Rotorua and our local tourism industry.

It’s fantastic to see the Lakeland Queen operating again. With the beautiful views across Lake Rotorua, cruise and dining experiences, I think it’s a wonderful addition to what Rotorua has to offer both visitors and locals.

And, of course, Business After 5 is always a great opportunity to meet other local business people, have some good conversations and build new connections — the beautiful lake views were definitely a bonus! 😊

Thank you to the Rotorua Business Chamber and the Lakeland Queen team for hosting such an enjoyable evening.

Great people, great conversations and a great Rotorua experience. ❤️

GST return coming up? Here are 7 common mistakes to watch for 👀

With the next GST deadline approaching, now is a good time to make sure your records are up to date.

Some common GST mistakes we see include:

1. Mixing business and personal spending
2. Claiming GST without adequate supporting records
3. Using the wrong GST period
4. Forgetting business expenses paid personally
5. Treating every bank deposit as a normal GST sale
6. Leaving GST preparation until the due date
7. Filing without reviewing the figures first

Good bookkeeping throughout the year can make GST preparation much easier and help identify problems before the return is filed.

📅 If your GST return and payment are due on 28 October, preparing early gives you time to check your records, find missing invoices and review anything unusual.

I’m pleased to share that I have completed the ASB + Xero AI Bootcamp for Business with

As accountants, we are seeing how quickly technology and AI are changing the way businesses operate, make decisions, and manage information.

For me, this programme was a valuable opportunity to better understand how AI can be used in a practical and responsible way, especially for small businesses.

AI is not about replacing good advice or human judgment. It is about using the right tools to work smarter, improve efficiency, and support better decision-making.

I’m looking forward to applying these learnings in a way that helps me continue supporting clients with practical, clear, and future-focused advice.

Thank you to ASB, Xero and academyEX for the opportunity.

Entertainment expenses can be confusing for business owners.

A coffee with a client.
Lunch with a supplier.
Food for a team meeting.
A gift basket for a customer.
Drinks at an event.

They may all feel like business expenses, but the tax treatment can be different.

In New Zealand, entertainment expenses may be:

• 100% deductible
• 50% deductible
• subject to FBT
• non-deductible if private or not clearly business-related

For example:

• An offsite lunch with a client or supplier is generally 50% deductible.
• Tea or coffee during a genuine working meeting may be fully deductible, depending on the situation.
• Food and drink at a staff party is generally 50% deductible.
• Gift baskets also need care, as food and drink may be treated differently from non-food items.

GST also needs to be handled correctly, especially where an annual adjustment is required.

This is why good records matter.

Instead of coding everything as “meals” or “entertainment”, note who attended, the date, the business purpose, where it happened, and whether there was any private element.

Small details can make a big difference when preparing income tax and GST returns.

Not every client comes with perfect records.

Sometimes they come with folders, paper records, bank statements, receipts, handwritten notes, and years of doing things the way they have always done them.

And that is okay.

Cloud accounting is great, and we absolutely encourage good systems. But every business is at a different stage.

Some clients need help getting organised before they can move online.

Some need someone to sit with them, understand what they have, and work through the records step by step.

At Accounting Experts, we try to meet clients where they are, not where we expect them to be.

Whether your records are in Xero, Excel, folders, or paper files, the most important thing is taking the first step towards getting things sorted.

Good accounting support should make clients feel clearer, not judged.

Your bank balance does not always tell you how your business is really doing.

Many business owners check their bank account and instantly feel stressed.

GST is coming up.
Suppliers need to be paid.
ACC may be due.
Tax is sitting in the back of their mind.

But a low or moving bank balance does not always mean the business is struggling.

Sometimes cash is going out because you are paying down debt, buying stock, investing in the business, paying tax because you made a profit, or simply managing normal business timing.

That is why looking at the numbers properly matters.

A simple cashflow review can help you understand what is actually happening, what is coming up, and whether there is a real problem — or just uncertainty causing stress.

Good accounting is not only about filing returns.

It is about helping business owners see the full picture, make better decisions, and feel more in control.

A higher tax bill is not always the problem. Sometimes, the real problem is that the tax bill was a surprise.

Many business owners work hard all year, but only look at their numbers properly when GST is due or when annual accounts are being prepared.

By then, it can feel stressful.

A few simple habits can make a big difference:

✔ Keep business and personal spending separate
✔ Reconcile your accounts regularly
✔ Put money aside for GST and income tax
✔ Review your profit during the year, not only at year-end
✔ Ask questions early, before the problem becomes urgent

Tax planning is not about avoiding tax.
It is about being prepared, making better decisions, and avoiding unnecessary stress.

At Accounting Experts, we help individuals and businesses stay organised, compliant, and confident with their numbers.

Behind every small business, there is a lot happening that people do not always see.

The planning.
The paperwork.
The late nights.
The decisions.
The responsibility.

As a business owner myself, I understand that running a business is not just about making sales. It is also about staying organised, managing cashflow, keeping up with GST and tax, and trying to make the right decisions for the future.

That is why I love helping small business owners feel more confident and in control of their numbers.

Because when your accounts are clear, your mind feels clearer too.
