Two compliance changes landed on the radar this week, and they taught the same lesson. 📋

One was a privacy deadline that passed on 3 August, catching out businesses who had no idea it applied to them (the news focused on big Supermarkets, the rules apply way wider). The other is a health and safety overhaul that doesn't take effect until 2027, giving everyone plenty of time to prepare.

Same type of change. Very different experiences for the businesses involved. And the only real difference is preparation.

Here's the thing about compliance. It rarely arrives without warning. The rules get announced, the dates get set, and the guidance follows. The businesses that get caught out usually aren't caught by the rule itself, they're caught by not knowing it was coming.

You don't need the best lawyers or the most expensive advisors to stay on the right side of this stuff. You just need to not be surprised. A simple "what's on my radar" habit does most of the work: know what's changing, know roughly when, and give yourself time to get ready.

So this week, take ten minutes. What rules affect your industry? What deadlines are coming? What did you file under "deal with later" that later has now arrived?

Getting ahead of it is almost always cheaper, calmer and easier than scrambling to catch up.

What's sitting on your compliance radar right now?

Do you use fingerprint clock-ins or facial recognition cameras? A New Zealand privacy law deadline just passed that probably applied to you. Plus the biggest health and safety changes since 2015, and how to get ahead of both before they really bite.

Sales are up. So why does hiring still feel so risky? 🤔

New Zealand small business sales just hit a four-year high, but most owners are holding off on taking on new people. And honestly, sometimes that caution is exactly right.

But there's a trap in waiting too long, and it's worth understanding.

When you hold off hiring until you're absolutely desperate, you don't hire well. You hire under pressure. And hiring in a panic is how the wrong person ends up on your team.

Think about what desperate hiring actually looks like. Decisions get rushed. You take whoever's available rather than holding out for who's actually right. Interviews get squeezed in between everything else. And the new person gets thrown in with no proper onboarding, because you needed them yesterday.

Meanwhile, there's a second cost most owners miss. While you're waiting, your best people are quietly covering the gap. Picking up the extra hours, carrying the load, holding it together. For a while they'll do it without complaint, and you might even mistake it for them thriving. But that's often the early stage of burnout, and burning out your best person is how you turn one staffing gap into two.

So the tip this week is simple. Hire on purpose, not in a panic.

Think ahead. Are your sales genuinely and sustainably up, or is it a one-off spike? Is your team stretched to the point it's costing you in quality or capacity? Could you bring someone on gradually, part-time or fixed-term, to test the water without over-committing?

And here's the timely part. With unemployment expected to be near an 11-year high, there's genuinely good talent available right now. That won't always be the case.

The businesses that grow well aren't the ones who hire fastest when the pressure hits. They're the ones who saw it coming and hired before the wheels started to come off.

Is your team stretched thinner than it should be right now?

Here's a question worth asking yourself this week: can AI actually find your business? 🔍

The way customers discover businesses is changing faster than most people realise. More and more, people aren't opening Google and scrolling. They're asking ChatGPT, Gemini, or Claude a question like "who's the best [your trade] in [your town]?" and getting a shortlist handed straight to them. No scrolling, no clicking, no ten blue links an no sponsored suggestions (yet!).

If your business isn't on that shortlist, you're invisible to those customers, and you'll never even know it happened.

So here's your tip for the week. Do the test yourself. Open ChatGPT, Gemini, or Claude and ask it to recommend a business like yours in your area. Do you show up? If not, that's your starting point.

The good news is that the things that make you findable by AI are the same things that have always mattered, just more important now than ever:

📱Your Google Business Profile. Make sure it's complete, accurate, and up to date. AI leans on it heavily.

💻Your website. Say clearly, in plain language, what you do, where you do it, and who you do it for. AI needs to understand you to recommend you.

⭐️Your reviews. Genuine reviews are a huge signal. The more real, positive reviews you have, the more likely AI is to put you forward.

Being found on Google's page one used to be the goal (and it's still the majority of search so not irrelevant). Now, being the business AI recommends is the new frontier (including the Google search AI summary!).

The businesses that sort this now will have a real edge over the ones still wondering why their enquiries are drying up.

Give it a go this week and see where you stand.

Some weeks the headlines feel relentless. 📰

This week alone we've had US tariffs on our exports set to rise, fuel prices climbing again on the back of Middle East conflict, and an inflation number due out that could shape interest rates for the rest of the year.

Here's the thing about every single one of those. There is nothing you, as a small business owner, can do to change any of them. You can't negotiate with Washington. You can't move the price of oil. You can't set the inflation rate.

So don't spend your energy there.

The businesses that come through uncertain times in good shape aren't the ones with a crystal ball. They're the ones who stay focused on the levers they actually hold. And you hold more than you might think.

Your pricing. Are your prices still right for what things actually cost you today, or have your margins quietly eroded while you weren't looking?

Your costs. Where's the fat? What are you paying for that you've outgrown, forgotten about, or could do more cheaply?

Your cash position. If things tightened over the next few months, how much buffer would you have? And what could you do now to build it?

Knowing your own vulnerabilities and managing them the best you can is worth infinitely more than worrying about things you were never going to control anyway.
Get your own house in order. That's what gets you through.

Which of those three could use some attention in your business this week?
