Three jobs a business owner has with tax money:

First, keep your suppliers and operating expenses paid. That’s priority one.

Once that’s done, the question is usually how much of what’s left sits in the tax account for IRD. Doesn’t have to go to them straight away, but carrying more than you need on hand keeps the pressure off.

What’s left after that is take-home!

Need help working out what yours looks like. Book a consultation through the link in bio.

Invoices that'll never get paid.

Most owners don't think to write these off when a customer goes into liquidation, so they're carrying the income in their accounts but not collecting the cash.

IRD tends to have opinions about that gap.

Books in order means you're paying the tax you actually owe, not tax on money that's never coming.

Three mistakes we see in new business owners right from the start.

We're calling them out in this one, and if you're just getting started, it's worth knowing what to watch for.

Watch to the end...

Turnover vs profit margin: which one matters?

A $500k business at 40% margin beats a $2M business at 5%.

Turnover is the vanity number. Margin is where the actual money sits. Plus, more money can often mean more admin, so don't give yourself an unnecessary headache!

Most struggling businesses we see don't have a revenue problem. They have a margin problem.

Is it tax deductible in NZ? Depends what it's for, not what it is.

There's no master list of deductible things. The question is how closely it's tied to earning your business income.
Sunglasses for a roofer working on a hot roof? Part of the job. Sunglasses for an accountant? Not part of the job.

If something gets used for work and for life, usually only the work part counts.

Save this for the next time someone claims everything's deductible!
