Two business owners. Two very different monthly accounting bills. Neither one is getting ripped off.

We get asked a lot: "Why does accounting cost so differently from place to place?"

Here's the honest answer. It's not about how big your business is. It's about what you actually need right now.

Just started out and need the basics done properly? That's compliance, GST and keeping you on the right side of IRD.

Growing and need to know which decisions actually make you money? That's cash flow forecasting, strategy sessions, and someone in your corner.

Scaling hard and need a proper right-hand advisor? That's ongoing mentorship and deep financial guidance.

Same industry, wildly different price tags, because the job being done is completely different. Worth checking which stage you're actually at, not which one sounds impressive.

Not sure which stage you're at? Book a free consult, and we'll tell you straight!

Most business owners check their bank balance daily and their actual financial position once a year at tax time. By then, the small issues have had twelve months to become big ones.

These 5 numbers take about ten minutes to check on a Monday morning and tell you more about your business health than your bank balance ever will.

I get asked this question all the time: "If we're making a profit, why is there no money in the bank?"

It's one of the biggest misconceptions in business.

Profit is what's left after your income and expenses are calculated.

Cash is what's actually sitting in your bank account today.

You can be profitable and still be waiting on customers to pay invoices.

That's why we encourage business owners to watch both. A healthy business needs profit and good cash flow.

Once you understand the difference, your numbers start making a lot more sense.

When you check in on your business, do you look at your profit or your bank balance first?

One great customer can transform your business. Relying on them too heavily can quietly put it at risk.

If a large portion of your monthly revenue comes from one customer, losing them, having them reduce their orders or even receiving one late payment could create an immediate gap.

This doesn’t mean you should value that customer any less.

It means you should understand the exposure and gradually build a wider customer base around them.

Take a look at your revenue from the past 12 months and ask:

“If our largest customer disappeared tomorrow, how long would we have to adjust?”

It’s an uncomfortable question, but a useful one.

Business was booming.

The phone wouldn't stop ringing. Their calendar was full weeks in advance.

But despite being busier than ever, there never seemed to be much money left at the end of the month.

After sitting down together and looking at the numbers, the problem became clear.

Their pricing hadn't kept pace with rising costs.

They weren't short on customers. They were short on margin.

Sometimes the answer isn't finding more work; it's making sure the work you're already doing is actually profitable.

That one conversation completely changed the direction of the business.

Have you reviewed your pricing in the last 12 months?

Starting a business is exciting... but it also comes with a lot of questions.

Some of our favourite client relationships are the ones that grow alongside the business itself.

We've had the privilege of supporting clients as they've gone from employees to business owners, helping them navigate everything from business setup through to the exciting challenges that come with growth.

Being there from the very beginning means we don't just understand the numbers; we understand the journey.

If you could go back to the day you started your business, what's one piece of advice you'd give yourself?

Your business pays the suppliers, the team and the bills…but does it reliably pay you?

Many business owners take whatever is left in the account and call it their pay.

The problem? If the business only appears profitable because your own time is underpaid, you’re not seeing the true cost of delivering the work.

Your pay should be planned for, not treated as a lucky bonus at the end of a good month.

A regular, realistic owner payment also makes it much easier to judge whether your pricing and business model are genuinely working.

Not sure what your business can sustainably afford to pay you? Let’s work through the numbers together.

One thing I've learnt after working with hundreds of businesses is that turnover gets far more attention than it deserves.

It's exciting to say you've had a record sales month. But higher sales don't automatically mean a healthier business.

I've seen businesses turning over millions of dollars while struggling to pay their bills. I've also seen smaller businesses with modest turnover generating excellent profits and giving their owners far more freedom.

The difference usually comes down to one thing: margin.

How much are you actually keeping after you've delivered your product or service?

Because at the end of the day, it's not about how much money flows through your business; it's about how much stays there.

If you're only tracking sales, you might be missing the number that matters most.

Year-end isn't when problems start. It's just when you find out about them.

Waiting until year-end to look at your numbers means every issue has already had 12 months to grow. And it's rarely one big thing; it's usually a handful of small ones compounding quietly:
→ A pricing mistake repeated on every job all year
→ Provisional tax payments falling further behind each instalment
→ A slow-paying client whose balance kept climbing because no one flagged it early

Regular check-ins catch all of this while it's still small and cheap to fix. Monthly, not annually, is the difference between a quick conversation and a genuine scramble.

Let's put a regular rhythm around your numbers. Book a free consult.

We've been doing this since 1987. Long enough to see every "unprecedented" challenge repeat itself.

Since 1987, we've worked alongside small and medium businesses across Rotorua, Tauranga and the wider Bay of Plenty through booms, downturns, and everything in between.

That matters more than usual right now. Only around 27% of NZ SMEs started in 2015 were still operating in 2025 a reminder that surviving long-term takes more than a good idea and hard work. It takes someone in your corner who's seen the pattern before and knows what actually works when things get tight, when they get busy, and everywhere in between.
