Greetings,
Even if farming isn't your day job, the recent surge in herd values is fascinating news. You likely have friends or family in the industry who would love to know, so please feel free to pass this on.
The 2026 Herd Values were released by the IRD with all sheep, beef cattle and dairy cattle values up compared to 2025 Herd Values and only Rising two-year stags down for Deer. The upside to moving to Herd Scheme is that any future increases in the Herd Values are tax free from year to year. The downside to moving is that it brings forward the tax cost on the difference between the NSC and Herd value.
You can view the full IRD values here: https://www.taxtechnical.ird.govt.nz/determinations/livestock/average-market-value/namv-2026
The average change in Sheep values went up by 36.16% from 2025 year.
The average change in Beef Cattle values went up by 33.50% from 2025 year.
The average change in Dairy Cattle values went up by 31.67% from 2025 year.
The average change in Deer values went up by 28.21% from 2025 year.
