Mind Your Money

Mind Your Money Being mindful about your money is not about not spending your money; it is about making informed decision.

How you manage, spend, and invest your money can have a profound impact on your life, yet very few schools teach these important skills. You were probably taught some basic math growing up, but too many people make it all the way to adulthood without ever learning basic money management. Skills like creating a budget, investing for the future, or even how credit cards work are startlingly rare ski

lls. Managing your finances feels like nothing but a lot of paperwork and numbers. You make X amount of dollars, you spend Y amount, and you try to make sure Y is less than X. However, your finances are just as much about psychology, habits, and the values you choose to live by.

The Road from Debt to Home Ownership - how one graduate did it through hard work and dedication.

"In 2016, I decided to take the bull by the horns and tackle my consumer debt once and for all. As a 40 something-year-old, Self-employed single mum of four, I found myself on my own and neck high in debt. I made the decision there‘s got to be more to life than this and I’m going to have to do the work to change it.

After a successful year studying the Certificate in Small Bussiness Management at Te Wānanga o Aotearoa, I decided to enrol again in the Certificate in Money Management.

Fast forward to February 2019 and my first house as a single woman has just gone unconditional. It certainly hasn’t been easy. There have been lots of sacrifices, hard work and lots of putting the knowledge that I gained into action.

I pummeled the debt then did a visit to a mortgage broker - it wasn’t good news - with my KiwiSaver and no debt - I probably could get a 2 bedroom ramshackle shack in gang territory or a million miles away from the kids' school and friends.

Ok keep going - the saving started and creating more income was the name of the game.

I can tell you that getting that email that my house has gone unconditional couldn’t have been a better feeling.
I highly recommend you sign up to the Certificate in Money Management, no matter what stage you are at financially.

Now I’m getting ready to set new goals, looking into the future. I've got a mortgage to smash out and a retirement nest egg to build. I only wish I’d done that course earlier." J.H. - CMM Graduate
