Some days remind us exactly why Accounting for a Cause means so much to all of us at Villa. 💛

Today, our Director, Annè, had the absolute privilege of visiting the incredible Glass Ceiling Arts Collective Whangarei here in Whangārei to personally present the donation raised through our Accounting for a Cause initiative.

To spend time with this amazing group, experience your creativity, your energy, your talent, and the genuine sense of whanaū you have created was something truly special.

The performance you shared with us today was powerful, moving, joyful, and unforgettable. It was a beautiful reminder of the life-changing impact that inclusive arts, creativity, and community connection can have.

To everyone at Glass Ceiling Arts Collective - thank you for welcoming Annè so warmly, for sharing your talent and your passion with us. We left feeling inspired, humbled, and incredibly grateful to play a small part in supporting the important work you do for our community.

At Villa, we believe business can be a force for good, and visits like today remind us why.

Thank you, Glass Ceiling Arts Collective, for what you do, for who you are, and for the magic you bring to Whangārei. ✨

Bookkeeping and accounting. People use these words interchangeably but they're not the same thing.

Here's the difference:

BOOKKEEPING: recording that you spent $2,000.
ACCOUNTING: understanding why you spent $2,000, where it went, and whether you should have.

One tracks the numbers. The other interprets them.

Both matter but if you only have one - and you're trying to grow - you're flying with half the instruments.

Villa founder Annè breaks this down in a recent episode of the Money Made Simple podcast with Simplicity. Swipe through for the full picture, and catch the episode on the Villa blog if you want the longer conversation: https://villaca.co.nz/villa-talks-dollars-and-sense-with-simplicity-nz/

Villa founder Annè didn't grow up dreaming of tax returns.

She came to New Zealand as a backpacker from Holland, fell in love with the country, and somehow ended up behind a bar in Northland trying to figure out what came next.

She started a business degree. Got to the accounting paper. Everyone in the class hated it yet she found it came naturally. So she leaned in.

That was the beginning of Villa. Not a plan. Just noticing where she was useful.

Nine years later, Villa is a team of 12 and Annè still believes the same thing she believed then: most people aren't bad with money. They just haven't had the right person in their corner.

She shares this story on a recent episode of the Money Made Simple podcast with Simplicity. It's on the Villa blog now - https://villaca.co.nz/villa-talks-dollars-and-sense-with-simplicity-nz/ 💛

Villa founder Annè recently sat down with Simplicity NZ to talk Dollars and Sense - and the first question she asks might surprise you.

"Are you sleeping okay?"

Financial anxiety has a way of showing up at 2am, when the laptop is closed and there's nothing left to distract you. If you're lying awake thinking about tax, cashflow, or whether your numbers even add up - it's not a you problem. It's a guidance problem.

Most people wait longer than they need to before reaching out to an accountant. Here are five signs it might be time to bring an accountant into your corner:

1. You've started a side hustle and you're not sure what to declare.
2. Money is coming in but you don't know how much of it is actually yours.
3. You're avoiding looking at your accounting software.
4. Tax season gives you genuine dread - not just mild inconvenience.
5. Your business has grown but your financial knowledge hasn't kept up.

Annè talks through all of these in a recent episode of the Money Made Simple podcast. The honest truth is, most people aren't bad with money. They just haven't had the right person in their corner.

The first conversation is always free, and it's never as hard as the build-up suggests. Give us a call on 09 434 0771.

Provisional tax. Two words that send most new business owners into a spin.

It's not a trap. It's not an ambush. It's just timing - and once you understand it, it stops being scary.
When you first start out, your tax isn't due until after the year ends. That gives you breathing room. But once IRD knows about your business, they ask you to pay tax as you earn - just like PAYE but in instalments.

The shock hits in year two, when you're paying the shortfall from year one AND keeping up with the current year at the same time.

It feels like a double bill. It's actually just a catch-up.

Most Kiwi businesses have started the 2027 financial year - which makes right now the best possible time to get your head around how provisional tax works, before the first instalment date sneaks up on you.

Our founder Annè gets asked about provisional tax more than almost anything else - and she talks through it in detail on a recent episode of the Money Made Simple podcast with Simplicity. Full episode on the Villa blog now.

You started a side hustle. Money hits your account. You think: I've made $50,000.

Next minute, new Hilux ordered. Family holiday to Rarotonga booked.

Then the tax bill arrives.

It's one of the most common situations Villa founder Annè sees when someone moves from PAYE into self-employment. The money is real but it isn't all yours.

Before you spend it: account for GST, set aside provisional tax, and know what's actually left. That's profit.

You can still get the Hilux. You just need the full picture first.

Annè talks this through on a recent episode of the Money Made Simple podcast with Simplicity. It's the conversation every side hustler needs to hear before year two arrives. What's the biggest mistake people make when it comes to tax? Our founder Annè sees this constantly - and her answer always starts the same way;
The money hits your account. It feels real. And before you know it, the Hilux is ordered. Then the hefty tax bill arrives.

The good news? Tax stress is completely avoidable if you know what to set aside before you spend...
