I listened to her proposal, I studied what she sent me, and then I realized that this was what was missing in our lives before. Financial Education for everyone
MAY FINANCIAL FREEDOM·SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 8, 2020·
My name is May Codina. I’m no one special but I’ve certainly overcome many extraordinary circumstances. You see, I firmly believe that if you truly want to change your life and if you want t
o see new results, you have to be prepared to do something you’ve never done before - even if it seems impossible. Let me start at the beginning. I am the eldest of 4 siblings. Growing up, we didn’t get to have everything we wanted. My father drove a tricycle for a living and whatever meager income he scraped at the end of the day was supplemented by my mother’s sales. She sold different products - from fish to household items, just to help make ends meet. We also had a small sari-sari store to add to my parents’ incomes. Being the eldest, I strived hard with my education. I wanted to prove that even with our circumstances, I could be the best that I could be. I also wanted to make my parents and my siblings proud. I was on a full scholarship during high school and then became a consistent dean’s lister during college. My college days weren’t easy either. I had to juggle my classes, deadlines, and projects while working at a Penshoppe outlet. Due to hard work and perseverance, immediately after my college graduation, I was promoted to become a Property Custodian for MEMO, a clothing store owned by Golden ABC, the fashion enterprise that owns Penshoppe, Oxygen, Forme, and other well-known local brands. And then, the unexpected happened. In 2005, my father passed away due to complications from an asthma attack. We were ill-prepared. To put it bluntly, we were too poor to get him the proper medical care. It was a devastating time for my family. But I did not lose hope. With my father gone, I had to work even harder. To help provide for my family, I worked as an OFW in the Middle East for about a year. When I came back, I became a BPO employee for a few years. And then I decided to try home-based work which I happened to enjoy. I then decided to leave the corporate world and pursue a home-based career. My life wasn’t only filled with trials, though. In 2010, I married my husband, Mark. We have two wonderful children together. But the loss of my father and the fact that we weren’t prepared for it were not far away from my mind. Especially now that I have children of my own. I listened to her proposal, I studied what she sent me and then I realized that this was what was missing in our lives before. I am a proud Sun Life Financial Advisor and my mission is to help Filipinos just like me to become prepared for the challenges that life has in store for all of us. I also love the flexibility of working for Sun Life. I have control over my working hours and I am still continuing my home-based work, too. I quote Benjamin Franklin, “By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.” With Sun Life, you can be prepared for anything.
