ZERO TRANSFER FEES: HOW THE SHIFT BEGAN

More Philippine banks are eliminating online transfer fees, marking a broader shift toward more affordable and accessible digital banking.

The movement began gaining ground in May, when LANDBANK reduced its InstaPay charges and introduced one free daily transfer for eligible transactions. The state-run bank later expanded its fee waivers before completely removing InstaPay and PESONet fees in July.

The measures were introduced under the leadership of LANDBANK Chairman and Finance Secretary Frederick D. Go, who underscored the direct benefit of lower banking costs to Filipino families and businesses.

“Every peso saved on transfer fees is a peso that Filipino families can spend on their daily needs and that businesses can reinvest in growth,” Go said.

Other major banks subsequently announced their own zero-fee or expanded free-transfer programs, accelerating the shift toward more inclusive and less costly digital financial services.

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has considered favorably the follow-on offering of San Miguel Corporation (SMC) of up to P30 billion.

In its meeting on July 7, the Commission En Banc resolved to render effective the registration statement of SMC covering 400 million series 2 preferred shares, subject to the company’s compliance with certain remaining requirements.
