Here’s a salute to all Filipino breadwinners — the people who quietly carry the weight of their families on their shoulders.
They work hard, make sacrifices, and often put their own needs last just to make sure their loved ones have what they need. In many ways, they are not only the backbone of their families, but also a vital part of what keeps our economy moving.
But while taking care of everyone else, who takes care of the breadwinner?
Looking after your family shouldn’t mean forgetting about your own future, well-being, and financial security. That’s where Manulife Philippines and its Advisors hope to make a difference — not by telling breadwinners what they should do, but by helping them explore practical ways to prepare for their own future while continuing to provide for the people they love.
Taking care of yourself isn't selfish. It's part of taking care of your family, too.
Two-thirds of Filipino adults surveyed in Manulife's Asia Care Survey provide family care, averaging 32 hours a week compared with the Asian average of 23 hours. About 68% financially support family members, allocating an average 48% of their monthly income to these responsibilities. The burden is particularly severe for the sandwich generation.
Among these adults, 74% said family financial responsibilities hinder their ability to become self-reliant, while 71% reported delaying medical care because of caregiving and financial obligations.
