Be PREPARED!
Have you heard of the Japanese village, Fudai?
The village has a cute story about preparing for a disaster.
You see, Fudai had a mayor, Kotoku Wamura, who had the foresight to build floodgates to protect his village from tsunamis.
His constituents thought the project was a complete waste of public funds but despite criticisms, the project saw completion.
It took 12 years to finish, and cost approximately $30MM (back in 2011).
When the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami hit, the village was spared. In fact, only 1 person from Fudai went missing. A man who went to check on his boat after the earthquake.
The village went to their former mayor's grave to give him thanks.
Now, the floodgate was completed in 1984, and it wasn't until 2011 that the village experienced a tsunami.
No wonder the villagers thought the project was a waste of money!
But they all sang a different tune WHEN disaster struck.
Didn't the mayor do the sensible thing? He knew he and his people live in Japan. He knew Japan had earthquakes and tsunamis. He knew he needed to do something to protect his people from natural disasters that typically happen in Japan.
