Did you know that the income tax was originally invented purely as a temporary emergency weapon to fight Napoleon Bonaparte?

In 1799, British Prime Minister William Pitt the Younger introduced the worldโ€™s first official income tax to fund the Napoleonic Wars. He swore to the public that it was a temporary measure that would be completely destroyed the moment the war ended.

While it was briefly repealed, governments quickly realized how much wealth it generated. By the time the United States introduced its own temporary income tax during the Civil War, the framework was set. What started as a quick emergency fund to stop a French dictator became a permanent fixture of global finance.
