One of the most common mistakes I see is parents insuring their children while remaining uninsured or inadequately insured themselves.
Many parents say they want insurance โfor their kidsโ and end up getting the kids insured first. But if the goal is to protect the children financially, it often makes more sense to insure the parents, the income generators, and make the children the beneficiaries.
After all, the parents are usually the ones earning the income and paying the bills. If a parent dies, becomes disabled, or gets critically ill, the familyโs finances are at riskโnot because the child was uninsured, but because the breadwinner was.
The best insurance โfor your kidsโ is often insurance on the parents.
