Nine years ago, I moved to Dubai to work as a sales associate in a mall, dreaming of a better life for my family. But it wasn’t easy. After sending money back home and covering my own expenses, my savings would disappear. I was stuck living paycheck to paycheck, and it was so frustrating.
One night, I decided to take charge. I wrote down every dirham I spent and realized how much was going to unnecessary things like takeout or gadgets. I started budgeting, cooking my own meals, and cutting out the extras. Slowly, my savings began to grow.
After gaining experience, I got promoted to a higher-paying role. Later, I transferred to another company with even better pay. But here’s the key—I didn’t change my lifestyle. I continued with my simple habits, which allowed me to save even more.
Still, I wanted my money to work for me. I invested in plans like Pag-IBIG MP2 and local cooperatives in my province. It was challenging at times, and I doubted myself, but I stayed focused. My dream was to build something for my family—to give them a better life.
After nine years of hard work, I made it happen. I used my savings to open a small bakery in my hometown. But that’s not all—I was also able to build a home for my family. Now, I wake up every morning baking pandesal and enjoy seeing my family in the house I worked so hard to build. It’s a simple life, but it’s one filled with pride and gratitude.
To my fellow OFWs, here’s what helped me:
-Track your spending and be honest with yourself.
-Set clear goals to remind you why you’re working hard.
-Live simply, even when your income increases.
-Look for ways to grow your money, like investments or cooperatives.
-Stay disciplined, because small sacrifices today lead to big rewards tomorrow.
