📊 **Bad Debts & Allowance — One Page Concept Summary (Exam Ready)**

Understanding bad debts under the **Allowance Method** is all about *estimation and adjustment*, not actual write-off.

🔹 **Core Idea:**
At year end, we adjust the **Allowance for Bad Debts** to match the *required estimate* based on receivables.

🔹 **Golden Rule:**
Required Allowance − Existing Allowance = Adjustment

🔹 **When % of Receivables is given:**

1️⃣ Take closing Accounts Receivable
2️⃣ Apply % → get Required Allowance
3️⃣ Compare with existing allowance
4️⃣ Pass adjusting entry

🔹 **If Allowance needs to INCREASE:**
Bad Debts Expense Dr
Allowance for Bad Debts Cr

👉 Expense increases → Profit decreases

🔹 **If Allowance needs to DECREASE:**
Allowance for Bad Debts Dr
Bad Debts Expense Cr

👉 Expense decreases → Profit increases

🔹 **Important Concept:**
✔ We are NOT touching debtors here
✔ We are only adjusting the *estimate of doubtful debts*

📊 **Section 153(3) – Minimum vs Adjustable Tax (Concept You Must Not Get Wrong!)**

Section 153(3) is one of the most misunderstood provisions in Pakistan tax law — and getting it wrong can lead to **incorrect tax payable, wrong refunds, and compliance risks**.

🔍 **Core Rule:**
Tax deducted under Section 153(1) & 153(2) for a **resident person** is treated as **MINIMUM TAX**

💡 **What is “Minimum Tax”?**
👉 It means:
• This tax is your **minimum liability**
• If normal tax is **less** → you still pay this amount
• If normal tax is **more** → you pay the difference

🚫 **But it is NOT always minimum — key exceptions apply:**

🟢 Goods [153(1)(a)]

✔ **Adjustable (Not Minimum)** if:
• Company is a **manufacturer**
• OR **Public listed company** (manufacturer or trader)

🟢 Contracts [153(1)(c)]

✔ **Adjustable** if:
• Payment is received by a **public listed company**

🔴 Services [153(1)(b)]

❌ Always **Minimum Tax** (No exception)

🔴 Export-related services [153(2)]

❌ Always **Minimum Tax**

⚠️ **Important Clarification (Explanation):**
“Income” means **gross amount** on which tax is deducted
👉 NOT profit — a common and costly mistake

🔥 **Why this matters?**

✔ Wrong classification = Wrong tax computation
✔ Treating adjustable as minimum → Loss of refund
✔ Treating minimum as adjustable → Tax shortfall

🎯 **Professional Insight:**
Before calculating tax or claiming refund, always ask:
