From June to August this year, my eldest daughter, Wang Liang-Yi, had the opportunity to intern at a Japan-based law and accounting firm specializing in Mergers & Acquisitions (M&A).
For her, it was a critical stage of professional growth. For our family, however, it became something far more meaningful—an experience that exceeded all expectations and left us deeply grateful.
The managing partner of this firm is a woman whose presence immediately conveys a sense of calm strength and stability. Upon meeting her for the first time, a line of classical poetry naturally came to mind:
“In the north there is a beauty, peerless and independent; one smile conquers a city, another conquers a nation.”
Yet the impression she leaves goes far beyond appearance. It is a quiet confidence and composure that radiates from within. In person, her presence is even more compelling than in photos or videos—something that can only be fully understood through direct interaction.
Her professional background is equally remarkable. She holds both the Japanese Certified Public Accountant and Attorney-at-Law licenses, and previously worked at PwC, where she received rigorous international-level training and extensive practical experience. Over the years, she has handled highly complex and fast-paced M&A, restructuring, and bankruptcy cases with exceptional clarity and control. Despite the intensity of such work, she consistently demonstrates a leadership style that is both gentle and resolute, managing complexity with confidence and ease.
During Liang-Yi’s internship, she was never treated as a passive observer. The managing partner personally brought her into client meetings and court proceedings, allowing her to directly engage with real-world corporate restructuring and bankruptcy processes. She also invited several internationally renowned entrepreneurs and founders of leading companies to share their entrepreneurial journeys, achievements, critical decisions, and personal lessons learned along the way. In addition, every colleague responsible for M&A transactions took the time to walk Liang-Yi through their ongoing cases—explaining deal structures, negotiation dynamics, practical challenges, and even small behind-the-scenes anecdotes that only experienced practitioners would know.
What moved us most was that this relationship extended far beyond professional mentorship. The managing partner once told Liang-Yi, with warmth and sincerity, that she was Elsa and Liang-Yi was Anna—forever sisters. What sounded like a gentle, lighthearted remark carried with it a deep sense of acceptance and long-term commitment. When these words reached us back in Taiwan, our entire family was deeply touched, many of us moved to tears.
She also went a step further by introducing Liang-Yi to her former mentor at PwC—now a PwC partner—who generously shared thoughtful and practical advice regarding Liang-Yi’s future path, including the pursuit of professional accounting certifications and long-term career direction. This guidance was not generic career counseling, but sincere mentorship rooted in experience and genuine care for the next generation.
The firm itself operates like a close-knit family. While maintaining an exceptionally high level of professionalism, the environment is energetic, collaborative, and supportive. The managing partner frequently invites colleagues to share meals and spend time together outside of work. This may reflect aspects of Japanese culture, but more importantly, it demonstrates the firm’s strong cohesion and the leader’s consistent, tangible support for her team.
Watching how she navigates complex decisions and high-pressure situations with such composure made us truly understand why Japan continues to produce world-class professionals. It is because of individuals like her—experts who embody discipline, craftsmanship, and a deep respect for their profession, practiced not as slogans but as daily habits.
We were also deeply grateful to see that Liang-Yi, who has always been introverted and slow to warm up, adapted beautifully to life in Japan and formed many sincere and meaningful friendships. In just three short months, she encountered people, values, and a culture that will stay with her for a lifetime.
I would therefore like to wholeheartedly and sincerely recommend this firm. Beyond their top-tier legal and accounting services, they also utilize advanced systems to assist companies with risk management and insurance planning. What truly sets them apart is their attentiveness to clients’ broader needs—whether related to business operations or daily life, including assistance with housing and relocation. They consistently approach every matter from the client’s perspective.
Because of Liang-Yi’s connection, this firm has also become open, for the first time, to working with non-Japanese clients. Should any friends or colleagues require support related to M&A, corporate restructuring, investment, legal or accounting matters, or even broader life planning involving Japan, I would be more than happy to provide introductions and assistance wherever possible.
This was not merely an internship.
It was a profound lesson in professionalism, character, trust, kindness, and long-term relationships.
For this extraordinary connection, our hearts are filled with nothing but gratitude.
