The Off Season for taxes is a good time to review your tax situation. If you received a large refund, there could be an advantage to changing your exemption status on your paychecks. If you would prefer to have more money throughout the year, talk to your payroll officer about making some changing.
There is an IRS form, the Tax Withholding Estimator, that can assist you. This form can be found online at IRS.gov.

We are on a bit of a roller coaster of taxation lately, with the Trump tax bill and the Biden tax bill, which come from opposite ideologies. But if you read history, the founders of this country, and later lawmakers, had a much more focused plan for funding the government. The first income tax bill was a
Bill enacted to pay for the Civil War. It was repealed a decade later, and not imposed again until 1913, when the high rollers having to fork up 5% on income over $500,000.

But, corporations paid little or no income tax for over 130 years of our nation. They still complain of corporate taxes, even as the real percentage of corporate income compared to corporate taxes has dropped significantly. Many influential people in our society believe that corporations should not have the burden of taxes. Even Ronald Reagan was quoted as being against corporations paying taxes. Donald Trump cut taxes for corporations.

One major concern of mine is the health of Ag producers. The last few years, with embargo’s, trade sanctions, isolation, Covid, and now drought are just a few problems that farmers and ranchers have to deal with. I can understand the financial difficulties that many producers have to deal with. I was a Bank Examiner for almost 20 years, and a big part of my work involved studying agriculture loans. I just read that the IRS is about six weeks behind processing returns. Another year of overwork for these hard working public servants. Some with the IRS got in trouble for targeting returns in years past, but the fact is, those working on processing returns and answering your phone call are the ones that suffer. Appreciate them when you get your refund. They have a thankless job, and are always understaffed and overworked. If your congressional representatives speak poorly about the IRS, clue them in.
